COASTAL HAZARD MESSAGE
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE TAMPA BAY RUSKIN FL
202 PM EDT FRI OCT 31 2014

...BUILDING SEAS ALONG WITH A HIGH RISK OF RIP CURRENTS ARE
EXPECTED ALONG THE COAST LATE TONIGHT THROUGH EARLY SUNDAY...

.A STRONG COLD FRONT WILL SWEEP SOUTH THROUGH THE REGION LATER
TONIGHT AND EARLY ON SATURDAY. IN THE WAKE OF THE THIS FRONT
NORTHWEST WINDS WILL INCREASE INTO THE 20 TO 25 KNOT RANGE WITH
GUSTS UP TO GALE FORCE OVER THE GULF WATERS. THESE INCREASING
WINDS WILL HELP TO BUILD SEAS INTO THE 7 TO 9 FOOT RANGE NEAR
SHORE AND 10 TO 15 FEET OVER THE OFFSHORE GULF WATERS LATER
TONIGHT THROUGH EARLY SUNDAY. THE BUILDING SEAS WILL LEAD TO
INCREASING SURF AND WAVE ACTION ALONG WITH A HIGH RISK FOR RIP
CURRENTS ALONG AREA BEACHES THROUGH THE PERIOD.

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN TAMPA BAY RUSKIN HAS ISSUED A
HIGH SURF ADVISORY...WHICH IS IN EFFECT FROM MIDNIGHT EDT TONIGHT
TO 4 AM EST SUNDAY. A RIP CURRENT RISK HAS ALSO BEEN ISSUED. THIS
RIP CURRENT RISK IS IN EFFECT FROM MIDNIGHT EDT TONIGHT THROUGH
LATE SATURDAY NIGHT.

* WAVES AND SURF...SEAS WILL INCREASE TO 7 TO 9 FEET NEAR SHORE
  AND 10 TO 15 FEET OFFSHORE.

* TIMING...MIDNIGHT TONIGHT THROUGH EARLY SUNDAY MORNING.

* IMPACTS...ROUGH SURF ALONG WITH LARGE BREAKING WAVES AND A HIGH
  RISK OF RIP CURRENTS ARE EXPECTED ALONG AREA BEACHES.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A HIGH SURF ADVISORY IS ISSUED WHEN DANGEROUS WATER ACTION IS
EXPECTED ALONG THE COAST.  THIS INCLUDES ROUGH SURF...LARGE
BREAKING WAVES...RIP CURRENTS...AND STRONG UNDERTOW.

BEACH GOERS ARE URGED TO HEED LIFEGUARD WARNINGS.

RIP CURRENTS ARE POWERFUL CHANNELS OF WATER FLOWING QUICKLY AWAY
FROM SHORE...WHICH OCCUR MOST OFTEN AT LOW SPOTS OR BREAKS IN THE
SANDBAR AND IN THE VICINITY OF STRUCTURES SUCH AS GROINS...
JETTIES AND PIERS. HEED THE ADVICE OF LIFEGUARDS AND THE BEACH
PATROL. PAY ATTENTION TO FLAGS AND POSTED SIGNS.

IF YOU BECOME CAUGHT IN A RIP CURRENT...DO NOT PANIC. REMAIN CALM
AND BEGIN TO SWIM PARALLEL TO SHORE. ONCE YOU ARE AWAY FROM THE
FORCE OF THE RIP CURRENT...BEGIN TO SWIM BACK TO THE BEACH. DO
NOT ATTEMPT TO SWIM DIRECTLY AGAINST A RIP CURRENT. EVEN A STRONG
SWIMMER CAN BECOME EXHAUSTED QUICKLY.
