.DISCUSSION...STRONG NORTHWEST WINDS WILL SLOWLY DECREASE THROUGH
THE DAY. HIGH TEMPERATURES WILL BE IN THE LOWER 60S WITH MINIMUM
RELATIVE HUMIDITY AROUND 20 PERCENT.

ON MONDAY...THE GRASSLAND FIRE DANGER INDEX IS EXPECTED TO BE IN
THE VERY HIGH TO EXTREME CATEGORIES.

MOISTURE CONTENT OF GRASSES...AND OTHER DRY ORGANIC MATERIAL
ON THE GROUND...INDICATE THAT CRITICAL BURNING CONDITIONS EXIST.
A FIRE WILL START EASILY AND HAS THE POTENTIAL TO BECOME LARGE
AND SPREAD QUICKLY BECOMING ERRATIC WITH EXTREME BEHAVIORAL
CHARACTERISTICS. NO OUTDOOR BURNING SHOULD TAKE PLACE.

THE OUTLOOK FOR MONDAY AFTERNOON...THE GRASSLAND FIRE DANGER
INDEX WILL REACH THE EXTREME CATEGORY.

.DISCUSSION...
VERY STRONG NORTHWEST WINDS ARE EXPECTED ACROSS THE REGION
TODAY... WITH GUSTS TO 50 MPH AT TIMES. WIND SPEEDS WILL DIMINISH
THROUGH THE JAMES RIVER VALLEY AND POINTS WESTWARD BY MID TO LATE
AFTERNOON...BUT HUMIDITY LEVELS WILL DROP TO CRITICAL LEVELS AT
THE SAME TIME. HUMIDITY LEVELS WILL BE SOMEWHAT HIGHER TO THE EAST
TOWARD SOUTHWEST MINNESOTA AND ADJACENT AREAS. HOWEVER...WINDS
WILL ALSO REMAIN STRONGEST IN THESE AREAS THROUGH THE AFTERNOON.
THUS FIRE DANGER WILL REACH EXTREME LEVELS ACROSS THE REGION THIS
AFTERNOON.

A RED FLAG WARNING HAS BEEN ISSUED FOR THE LOWER BRULE...JAMES
RIVER VALLEY...AND MISSOURI RIVER/LOWER BIG SIOUX VALLEY AREAS
THIS AFTERNOON...WHERE THE LOWEST HUMIDITY LEVELS ARE EXPECTED. A
FIRE WEATHER WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT FOR THE MIDDLE BIG SIOUX
VALLEY...SOUTHWEST MINNESOTA...AND THE IOWA GREAT LAKES WHERE
HUMIDITY LEVELS WILL BE HIGHER.

WESTERLY FLOW ON MONDAY SHOULD FAVOR STRONG MIXING...RESULTING IN
AFTERNOON WIND GUSTS TO AROUND 25 MPH OR SLIGHTLY HIGHER...ALONG
WITH MINIMUM HUMIDITY LEVELS FROM 20 TO 25 PERCENT OVER MUCH OF
THE THE AREA. FIRE DANGER WILL BE VERY HIGH THROUGHOUT THE AREA...
BUT COULD APPROACH EXTREME IF WINDS BECOME SLIGHTLY STRONGER THAN
FORECAST.

ELEVATED FIRE DANGER LEVELS WILL BE POSSIBLE AGAIN WEDNESDAY AND
THURSDAY.

CONSIDER POSTPONING BURNING DUE TO THE EXTREME FIRE DANGER.
PEOPLE ARE URGED TO EXERCISE EXTREME CARE WITH RESPECT TO OUTDOOR
ACTIVITIES THAT COULD CAUSE GRASS FIRES. AVOID EQUIPMENT THAT CAN
CAUSE SPARKS NEAR DRY GRASS OR BRUSH. DO NOT TOSS CIGARETTES ON
THE GROUND. REPORT NEW FIRES QUICKLY TO THE NEAREST FIRE
DEPARTMENT OR LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICE.
