Assessment of several areas of damage began May 8th and will continue into May 9th. Damage associated with tornadoes has been listed below. Some areas of straight line wind damage also occurred but are not covered in this update. .Angola EFU... Rating: EF-U Estimated Peak Wind: N/A Path Length /statute/: 0.04 miles Path Width /maximum/: N/A Fatalities: 0 Injuries: 0 Start Date: 05/07/2024 Start Time: 06:11 PM EDT Start Location: 2 NNW Silver Lake / Steuben County / IN Start Lat/Lon: 41.6573 / -85.0702 End Date: 05/07/2024 End Time: 06:12 PM EDT End Location: 2 NNW Silver Lake / Steuben County / IN End Lat/Lon: 41.6577 / -85.0695 Survey Summary: Numerous reports of funnel clouds were received from west of Angola to north of Angola including in the area of Crooked and Loon lakes. Video footage confirms a brief touchdown north of W 100 N and west of W Landis Road, likely over an open field. No damage was found in the area, resulting in a EF-U rating. && .Union Lake MI EF1... Some evidence of larger RFD wind damage inbetween tracks and just north and east of here. && .Dowagiac/Twin Lakes EF1... Rating: EF1 Estimated Peak Wind: 95 mph Path Length /statute/: 11.83 miles Path Width /maximum/: 950 yards Fatalities: 0 Injuries: 0 Start Date: 05/07/2024 Start Time: 05:11 PM EDT Start Location: 4 SE Decatur / Cass County / MI Start Lat/Lon: 42.0682 / -85.9168 End Date: 05/07/2024 End Time: 05:38 PM EDT End Location: 1 NW Dowagiac / Cass County / MI End Lat/Lon: 41.995 / -86.1227 Survey Summary: An EF-1 tornado with maximum wind speeds of 95 mph occurred in the early evening of May 7th in Cass County, MI. The tornado touched down in a field just north of the Dowagiac Municipal Airport. The tornado did damage to trees along Middle Crossing Rd, even uprooting a few large trees onto homes in the area. The tornado continued northeast, where a power pole was snapped and a few center pivots were flipped in a field adjacent to the Amtrak railroad near the intersection of Gage Street and Atwood Road. The tornado reached its maximum width in the Twin Lakes area, where extensive damage to trees was noted on all sides of both lakes. Hundreds of trees of varying sizes were snapped and uprooted in Twin Lakes. The tornado continued northeast, snapping trees on Dewey Lake Street. Additional damage to a barn was noted on Wickett Road. The tornado dissipated near the Cass/Van Buren County line. && .Melrose OH EF1... Rating: EF1 Estimated Peak Wind: 105 mph Path Length /statute/: 3.23 miles Path Width /maximum/: 300 yards Fatalities: 0 Injuries: 0 Start Date: 05/07/2024 Start Time: 08:11 PM EDT Start Location: 2 WSW Melrose / Paulding County / OH Start Lat/Lon: 41.0844 / -84.459 End Date: 05/07/2024 End Time: 08:14 PM EDT End Location: 1 WSW Oakwood / Paulding County / OH End Lat/Lon: 41.0866 / -84.3972 Survey Summary: Several reports of funnel clouds and a touchdown were received from near Latty east to south of Melrose and west of Oakwood. The most extensive damage occurred north of Road 82, along Road 151 where several structures were impacted. A unanchored home was slid 18 feet off its foundation into the west side of a barn. Max wind speeds have been estimated around 105 mph. && .St. Joseph County into Branch County MI St Joseph County Emergency Management has been assessing damage in a swath from roughly south of Centreville northeast to north of Colon and to the St. Joseph/Branch county line. Branch county EMA officials and the NWS completed the survey of damage in NW Branch county from Havens Lake northeast to south of Union Lake. The strongest damage found in Branch county was consistent with EF2 damage and estimated winds of 130 mph. Since the track is not finalized with damage in St. Joseph county, the final rating and track detials will not be released at this time. A survey team plans to assess St. Joseph county on May 9th. && EF Scale: The Enhanced Fujita Scale classifies tornadoes into the following categories: EF0.....65 to 85 mph EF1.....86 to 110 mph EF2.....111 to 135 mph EF3.....136 to 165 mph EF4.....166 to 200 mph EF5.....>200 mph NOTE: The information in this statement is preliminary and subject to change pending final review of the event and publication in NWS Storm Data. $$ Holsten/Fisher/Brown/Johnson
