Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Elko NV
236 AM PDT Tue May 21 2024

.SYNOPSIS...Mostly sunny today with temperatures a little warmer
than Monday, though still a few degrees below normal. Increasing
clouds across northern NV tonight into Wednesday, with showers and
thunderstorms across mainly just northern Humboldt and northern
Elko counties. Gusty westerly winds across the region Wednesday.

&&

.SHORT TERM...Today through Wednesday night. Shortwave trough
energy exits east into Utah early this morning setting up a dry
northwesterly flow aloft for this afternoon. Most locations will
warm by a few degrees today. This evening and overnight jet energy
drops in from the northwest which will result in increased clouds
across northern NV, and some light rain to northern Humboldt and
northern Elko counties. Light shower activity continues on
Wednesday across northern Humboldt and Elko counties, with a
10-15% chance of thunderstorms up near the Idaho border. A cold
front passes from NW to SE across the CWA on Wednesday which will
produce gusty westerly winds. Strongest winds are expected over
the northern half of the CWA, mainly Humboldt county, northern
portions of Lander and Eureka counties, and Elko county. At this
time winds look to fall just short of wind advisory criteria
(sustained 30 mph) for the majority of each zone, though higher
winds are likely across some of the higher summits and mountains.
Showers and isolated thunderstorms end Wednesday evening, with
winds also diminishing into the late evening hours.

.LONG TERM...Thursday through next Tuesday.

Cooler than normal temperatures in the 50s and 60s will be in
place behind the cold front that will move through the region
Wednesday. A few spotty convective showers are expected across
central Nevada Thursday and Thursday night but precipitation will
be limited.

Light west to northwest winds will continue through Friday before
southwest winds and warmer temperatures return ahead of the next
trough. This trough energy will pass mainly north of the state but
a few showers are expected across eastern Nevada Saturday as the
upper- level wave propagates eastward in addition to elevated winds
of 15-25 mph with gusts to 35 mph. Temperatures will hold steady
int eh 70s for Sunday with lows over the weekend in the 30s and
40s. Some freezing temperatures are expected across northern
Nevada Sunday morning.

A ridging pattern is expected to return early next week bringing
warmer temperatures and continued dry conditions to the state
Monday and Tuesday. Highs will jump back into the 80s in some
valleys farther south and west, with even warmer conditions
statewide on Tuesday.

&&

.AVIATION...VFR conditions will be the primary flight conditions
through Tuesday. Clouds will continue to dissipate through the
overnight period. Light afternoon WNW winds of 5KT to 15KT with
gusts up to 25 KT possible for N NV. Winds for central NV
terminals KTPH, and KELY will be a bit stronger out of the NW at
10KT to 20KT with a few gusts up to 30KT.

&&

.HYDROLOGY...As high elevation spring snowmelt continues, many
streams and creeks coming off snow covered terrain will
experience elevated flows. This weeks cooler temperatures have
slowed the rate of snowmelt, however elevated flows persist. Late
this weekend and into next week as warmer temperatures return,
expect flows on many creeks and rivers to rise again, possibly up
into action stage. If and when river gauge water levels reach
action stage or higher, additional hydrologic products will be
issued.

.LKN Watches/Warnings/Advisories...None.
