Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Elko NV
120 AM PDT Fri May 24 2024

.SYNOPSIS...
Unsettled weather resumes across today and Saturday due to a
storm system impacting the region, leading to increased
precipitation chances. A warming trend with dry weather is
forecast Sunday through Tuesday of next week as high pressure
aloft builds over the Intermountain West.

&&

.SHORT TERM...Friday through Saturday

An upper level storm system approaches the district today. Ahead
of the trough of low pressure will see increasing cloud cover this
morning across Central and Northern Nevada, as well as increasing
chances of showers in the afternoon. Hi-res model guidance
depicts isolated showers starting in the early afternoon hours,
and becoming more widespread in the evening. Isolated
thunderstorms in White Pine County, as well as Nye County are
conceivable this afternoon associated with limited instability.

On Saturday, chances for showers continue as the trough and
associated cold front impact the district. An uptick in westerly
winds across the entire region will occur associated with the
cold front. HREF guidance shows some instability in eastern Elko
County & White Pine Counties by late morning through early
afternoon Saturday, which is also where NBM guidance shows a
chance of isolated thunderstorms. As the storm exits the region on
Saturday afternoon, lingering showers are forecast to diminish as
dry air makes its way through Nevada.

.LONG TERM...Sunday through next Friday

Dry conditions expected Sunday into early next week as a ridge of
high pressure builds over the Intermountain West. A weak upper-
level disturbance will bring light rain showers across far
northeastern Nevada Tuesday morning and afternoon. Winds will be
fairly light Monday but southwest winds will increase by midweek
as a trough slowly moves into the Pacific Northwest. Highs will
rise into the lower to mid 80s and overnight lows in the 40s.

&&

.AVIATION...VFR conditions will continue through the next 24 hours
at all terminals. Breezy winds 20-30KT are possible at all
terminals during the afternoon and early evening hours. -SHRA is
also possible but occurrence on station remains low, so went with
VCSH.

&&

.HYDROLOGY...Cooler temperatures the past several days have
slowed the rate of snow melt and flows on faster responding small
creeks and streams. Temperatures will quickly warm Sunday and
early next week and flows on many small creeks and streams are
expected to again rise, possibly into action stage for some, such
as Lamoille Creek. The lower Humboldt continues to run strong with
Battle Mountain currently in action stage and Comus forecast to
enter action stage early next week.

Wildhorse Reservoir resides in action stage and is forecast to
remain in action stage for the next several days.

The Humboldt River at Battle Mountain resides in action stage and
is forecast to remain in action stage for the next several days.
