852 FXUS65 KLKN 182035 AFDLKN Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Elko NV 135 PM PDT Sat May 18 2024 .SYNOPSIS...Quiet weather overnight with temperatures expected to be a few degrees warmer. A cold front moves into the silver state Sunday and into early next week, bringing cooler temperatures and chances for precipitation. && .SHORT TERM...Tonight through Sunday Isolated dry thunderstorms expected to dissipate, leaving calm quiet weather overnight. Temperatures overnight expected to be in the 30s to 40s. Sunday, an upper level trough moving from the northwest is expected to move over the silver state by the afternoon, bringing cooler temperatures and increase chances up to 20% for precipitation along eastern and northern Nevada. Highs for northern Nevada is expected to be in the 50s to 60s with central Nevada in the 60s to 70s. Westerly winds expected to increase from the passing front, with winds at 15-20 mph. .LONG TERM...Monday through next Friday. Models are in fairly decent agreement with the incoming upper trough passage on Monday. This will bring another breezy to locally windy day across the area with wind gusts of 20 to 25 mph during the afternoon. Isolated to scattered showers are expected to develop across north and eastern Nevada during the day though accumulations are going to be light. Snow levels are expected to be around 6000 to 6500 feet with light accumulations of less than a half inch above 8000 feet. Highs for the afternoon period will be cooler than normal with readings in the 50s and 60s. The system will slowly move eastward, though isolated showers will continue across east- central Nevada during the overnight period. Other locations are expected to remain dry. Overnight lows will dip into the 30s with some of the colder locales in central Nevada seeing the 20s. A northwest flow will remain over the area on Tuesday with a break in the light precipitation. Temperatures for the afternoon will remain on the cool side with readings in the 60s to near 70. Lows will be in the 30s and 40s. Precipitation on both days are expected to be rather isolated to scattered with amounts less than 0.05" on both days. Winds will be out of the north and northwest and breezy with gusts to 20 mph the afternoon. Another upper level low pressure system is expected to dive southward Wednesday and affect mainly the northern half of the forecast area through Friday. The threat for light showers will exist though accumulations will continue to remain fairly light. Highs during this period will be in the 60s to low 70s with lows in the 30s. Afternoon breezy conditions will develop with speeds of 10 to 20 mph and gusts to 30 mph or so. && .AVIATION...VFR conditions expected for the next 24 hours at all terminals. ISOLD VCTS/VCSH to continue across central Nevada near the KELY and KTPH terminals. Potential impacts will include gusty and erratic outflow winds up to 35 knots. Breezy W-NW winds will also be present in the afternoon with gusts 20 to 25 kts. && .FIRE WEATHER...Dry and calm conditions overnight as isolated dry thunderstorms over central Nevada dissipate. Increasing clouds Sunday from an approaching cold front, bringing cooler temperatures with increasing westerly winds shifting northwesterly in the afternoon and isolated showers overnight into Monday morning. && .HYDROLOGY...Runoff from snow melting from the remaining high mountain snowpack will continue through the weekend and early next week, which will result in elevated, and at times, increasing flows on streams and creeks coming off snow covered higher terrain. The Bruneau River, Owyhee River at Mountain City, Wildhorse Reservoir, Lamoille Creek, and the Jarbidge River near Jarbidge are all currently at or near action stage, and are expected to remain elevated over the coming days. && .LKN Watches/Warnings/Advisories...
