Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Pocatello ID
232 PM MDT Sun May 26 2024

.SHORT TERM...Tonight through Memorial Day.
Under the increasing influence of a H5 ridge of high pressure
building in from the Pacific, look for temperatures to continue a
warming trend into early next week. Conditions will remain dry
through Monday outside of isolated showers/thunderstorms across
NRN Clark and Fremont Counties this afternoon and evening. High
temperatures today will be in the 50s/60s and will warm by about
6-10 degrees for Memorial Day, bringing highs into the 60s/70s as
the H5 ridge axis begins to shift overhead. Overnight lows tonight
will remain seasonably cool across the Snake River Plain and ERN
Magic Valley but outside of pockets of low to mid 30s, the
coverage should not necessitate any frost/freeze product with
warmer lows expected for Monday night.

Associated with 20-30 kt 700 mb winds aloft today, winds will
remain elevated with gusts up to 35-45 mph. As a result, a LAKE
WIND ADVISORY remains in effect through this evening for American
Falls Reservoir but with quieter winds moving in for Memorial Day,
additional lake wind products are not expected. MacKay

.LONG TERM...Tuesday through next Sunday.
Upper level ridge moves east on Tuesday and southwesterly flow
will allow temperatures to warm substantially with most low
elevations highs in the 80s and 60s and 70s in the mountains. A
weak upper level wave in the southwesterly flow aloft will
increase the chance of showers and thunderstorms as well Tuesday
afternoon and evening. A cold front will move quickly through
eastern Idaho Tuesday night and the upper trof slides through.
Will have continued showers and thunderstorms Wednesday with
temperatures dropping about 10 to 15 degrees from Tuesday with
highs in the 60s to lower 70s mainly. It will be windy especially
in the Snake River Plain behind the front with some 20 to 30 mph
sustained winds expected. Temperatures will be even colder
Thursday with highs in the 50s mountains and 60s valleys. Model
blend still has a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms in
the central mountains and upper snake highlands. It will remain
breezy with 10 to 20 mph winds in the Snake River Plain. Friday
will be dry with only isolated thunderstorms in the Snake River
Plain. Temperatures will warm about 5 degrees with winds dying
down. Will see much warmer conditions next weekend with low
elevation highs hitting the 80s once again by Sunday. It is
expected to be dry next weekend as well. GK
