...NWS STORM SURVEY CONFIRMS STRAIGHT-LINE WIND DAMAGE OCCURRED
WEDNESDAY FROM GREENUP COUNTY KY EASTWARD TO SOUTHERN PUTNAM
COUNTY WV...

A NWS Storm Survey was conducted today and confirmed straight-
line wind damage occurred in a roughly 10 mile wide swath from
eastern Greenup County, KY across southern Lawrence County, OH,
central Cabell County, WV, into southern Putnam County, WV.

In general winds of 50 to 60 mph occurred in this swath, which
caused sporadic tree damage and power outages. Pockets of much
stronger winds were found in this swath, indicative of embedded
microbursts. Areas that were surveyed where these stronger winds
were found included along McKay Rd near Greenup, KY, in the
Flatwoods and Raceland areas of Greenup County, downtown Ironton,
OH, and in a line from north of Rome Township in Lawrence County,
OH, across the river into the Cox Landing community of Cabell
County. Damage in these areas indicates wind speeds reached 90
to 100 mph in pockets. As a result many large hardwoods trees
were snapped or uprooted in these areas along with some
structural damage.

A very distinctive path of hail damage was also noted in the Cox
Landing area of Cabell County where trees were defoliated and wind
blown hail damaged the siding of homes. Hail up to the size of
nickels accumulated up to 3 inches deep in this area.

Thanks to the Emergency Management agencies in Cabell, Lawrence
and Greenup Counties for assistance with these surveys.
