THE REMNANTS OF A TROPICAL SYSTEM THAT PASSED OVER THE NORTHERN INNER CHANNEL AREA ON THE 4TH RESULTED IN THUNDERSTORMS DEVELOPMENT FROM HAINES AREA DOWN THROUGH STEPHENS PASSAGE AND OVER TO ICY STRAIT AND GLACIER BAY AREA. JUNEAU AREA HAD REPORTS OF THUNDERSTORMS AND WIND GUSTS AS HIGH AS 45 MPH, WITH THE HIGHEST WINDS RECORDED AT THE JUNEAU AIRPORT. THE AMHS FERRY THE KENNICOTT REPORTED A THUNDERSTORM WITH WIND GUSTS OF 43 MPH IN FAVORITE CHANNEL. ABOVE NORMAL TEMPERATURES WAS THE MAIN THEME FOR THE MONTH FOR MUCH OF THE PANHANDLE. THE EXCEPTION WAS THE SOUTHERN AREA WHERE THEY HAD MORE CLOUDS AND THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURES ENDED THE MONTH NEAR NORMAL AT 55 DEGREES. ON JUNE 8TH TWO LONG STANDING RECORD HIGH TEMPERATURES WERE REACHED OR SURPASSED AT SITKA AND YAKUTAT AIRPORT. SITKA BROKE THE PREVIOUS RECORD OF 71 DEGREES SET IN 1950 REACHING 72 DEGREES. YAKUTAT TIED THE PREVIOUS RECORD OF 78 DEGREES LAST SET IN 1947. ALTHOUGH A WARMER THAN NORMAL MONTH, THOSE WERE THE ONLY DAILY RECORDS REACHED DURING THE MONTH OF JUNE FOR THE 4 CLIMATE SITES OF YAKUTAT, SITKA, JUNEAU AND KETCHIKAN. THE EXTENDED DAYS OF WARM TEMPERATURES RESULTED IN RISING RIVER LEVELS DUE TO SNOW MELT FOR AREAS OF THE CHILKAT RIVER NEAR SKAGWAY. ON JUNE 16TH AN ADVISORY WAS ISSUED AND WAS EXTENDED THROUGH THE REMAINDER OF THE MONTH AND CONTINUED INTO JULY. KETCHIKAN LEAD FOR THE WETTEST CLIMATE SITE WITH ALMOST 5 AND A HALF INCHES OF PRECIPITATION FALLING. ON THE OTHER HAND SITKA HAD THE LEAST AMOUNT OF PRECIPITATION WITH ONLY 1.31" MEASURED. BOTH SITES WERE AROUND 1.5" BELOW NORMAL FOR THE MONTH. YAKUTAT FINISHED BEING THE DRIEST STATION WITH NEARLY 3" BELOW NORMAL PRECIPITATION FALLING WITH ONLY 2.29" MEASURED. INTERESTINGLY, JUST OVER HALF OF THE MONTHLY PRECIPITATION FELL IN ONE DAY. 1.15" WAS COLLECTED ON THE 5TH, WHILE ANOTHER 0.69" FELL ON THE NEXT DAY. AT THE MID MARK FOR THE YEAR KETCHIKAN, YAKUTAT AND SITKA ARE ALL BELOW NORMAL FOR PRECIPITATION AMOUNTS RANGING FROM NEARLY 14" IN KETCHIKAN TO ALMOST 2" IN SITKA. IN CONTRAST, JUNEAU IS RUNNING JUST OVER 5" ABOVE NORMAL. DENSE FOG ADVISORY FOR THE PETERSBURG, WRANGELL AND PRINCE OF WALES AREA WERE ISSUED ON THE 7TH, WITH ONLY THE PETERSBURG AREA DEVELOPING DENSE FOG ON THE 30TH. VAUGHAN/CHAMBERS $$
