Weather Summary for Iowa
National Weather Service Des Moines IA
513 AM CDT Sat May 18 2024

Today:

After a warm day in Iowa, it`s been a relatively quiet night with
mostly clear skies and temperatures falling into the low to mid 60s as
of 4 am. Some patchy clouds with isolated precipitation have
developed over the northern and western portions of the state, but
little rain has managed to reach the ground so far.

Mostly clear skies with sporadic cloud cover will prevail today as
temperatures climb into the low 80s west to upper 80s east. A weak
front will move through the area today, leading to breezy conditions
and the potential for a few isolated to scattered showers and
thunderstorms this afternoon. These will mainly be in the eastern half
of Iowa. A few stronger storms may produce gusty winds and small hail.
Otherwise, it looks to be another warm but pleasant summer like day in
Iowa.

Tonight and beyond:

A fairly active pattern begins to set up starting Sunday afternoon and
lasting intermittently into the beginning of next week. Storms on
Sunday afternoon will begin over western Iowa in the afternoon, before
expanding east over much of the state Sunday night and into Monday
morning. A few strong to severe storms will be possible through this
period, with wind and hail being the main concerns. In addition,
locally heavy rainfall will be possible. Additional thunderstorm
chances are then expected on Tuesday, with severe weather and locally heavy
rainfall again being possible.
