Weather Summary for Iowa
National Weather Service Des Moines IA
501 AM CDT Fri May 17 2024

Today:

The quiet and comfortable conditions from last night continue early
this morning. Skies are mostly clear across the state, aside from a
few patchy clouds passing over far northwest Iowa. Temperatures as of
4 am are generally in the low to mid 50s. Winds have been light and
variable.

Quiet conditions continue today with mostly clear skies and
light to breezy southerly winds. The breeziest winds will be over
northwest Iowa and taper off further south and east. Temperatures
today will be warm, with highs in the low 80s southeast to the upper
80s northwest.

Tonight and beyond:

Warm temperatures continue through the weekend, with highs in the mid
80s Saturday and low 80s on Sunday. A weak front passing through
Saturday may lead to some isolated showers and thunderstorms in the
afternoon, mainly over northern and eastern Iowa. Severe weather is
not expected Saturday. However, as we look ahead to Sunday,
thunderstorm chances will increase through the day and into early next
week. Heavy rain and a few severe storms will be possible, first over
western Iowa Sunday afternoon then further into central and eastern
Iowa through the first half of next week. Make sure to keep up on the
latest forecast as we head into what could be an active beginning of
next week.
