In 1995, severe thunderstorms struck Hodgeman County Kansas where 80 mph gusts snapped several power poles in half 11 miles north of Jetmore. In 1961, Category 5 Hurricane Carla battered the Central Texas Coast with sustained winds that reached around 175 MPH. Some areas were overwhelmed by around 16 inches of rain. In addition, Carla spawned the most powerful hurricane-related tornado on record when a vicious F4 tornado swept across Galveston Island.The twister killed 8 and injured 55. The winds inside the vortex were nearly 50% more powerful than Carla`s were at peak intensity. Carla spawned 18 tornadoes, of which 10 struck Louisiana and 8 struck Texas. In all, Carla killed 45 and caused around $300 million damage. Adjusting for inflation, the damage cost of Carla equates to about $3.59 billion dollars today. Carla ranks as the 10th most intense hurricane to ever strike the mainland United States. $$ Auto
