Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Elko NV
123 PM PDT Thu Sep 26 2024

.SYNOPSIS...High pressure will bring quiescent conditions to the
area through the weekend. Temperatures will rise to well-above
normal levels for this time of year with some temperatures
reaching to near record highs in the lower 90s. A weak cold front
will bring slightly cooler temperatures early next week but dry
conditions will continue.

&&

.SHORT TERM...Tonight through Friday night.

Broad weak southwest flow over the region on the western periphery
of a ridge of high pressure across the intermountain west will
allow temperatures to rise over the next few days. Above normal
temperatures will continue through FRiday with lows tonight only
dropping into the 40s and lower 50s and highs Friday reaching well
into the 80s in most valleys. Skies will be clear through Friday
night.

.LONG TERM...Saturday through next Thursday.

Southwesterly flow aloft will bring near-record warmth to
northern and central NV Saturday. Highs on Saturday will be in the
upper 80s to low 90s for most locations, which will be 12 to 18
degrees above normal for the date. Low temperatures Saturday night
will be in the upper 40s to mid 50s, with a couple locations such
as West Wendover in the low 60s. A four-corners high Saturday
weakens into Sunday as low pressure moves in over southern CA,
which will greatly diminish the warm southwesterly flow over the
CWA. As such, the record to near-record temperatures Saturday will
trend cooler Sunday, though still remain a good 10 to 12 degrees
above normal. Little to no change in the temperatures across
central NV from Sunday to Monday, however temperatures across the
northern half of the CWA will cool an additional 3-5 degrees
Monday afternoon as trough energy passes through the Pacific NW
and inter-mountain west. Weak flow aloft across the Great Basin
region Tuesday through Thursday, with a cutoff low along the
southern CA coast and a near-zonal jet passing through the Pacific
NW. Dry conditions persist across the CWA through the entire long
term period.

&&

.AVIATION...VFR conditions at all terminals through Friday
with high pressure across the region producing clear skies,
relatively light winds and well above normal temperatures.

KEKO is AMD NOT SKED due to comms issue.

&&

.FIRE WEATHER...Very dry conditions continue under the influence
of a persistent high pressure area. RH during the day will drop
to below 10% in some valleys over the next several days with
temperatures climbing to near record territory, in the lower 90s
Saturday. Winds will be light and terrain driven Friday with more
of a consistent southwest wind on Saturday but well below
critical thresholds. A slight cool down is expected next week but
temperatures will continue to trend above normal into next week.
