Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Elko NV
212 PM PDT Fri May 24 2024

.SYNOPSIS...A weather disturbance will bring isolated to
scattered showers to portions of central and northeastern Nevada
through tonight. Showers are expected to diminish and move
eastward by late Saturday morning into Saturday afternoon leaving
behind breezy west- northwest winds and mild temperatures int he
60s and lower 70s. A gradual warmup through early next week
commences Sunday with another chance for showers beginning Tuesday
with seasonally warm temperatures for the latter part of next
week.

&&

.SHORT TERM...Tonight through Sunday night

An upper-level trough moving through the region will bring a few
showers to central Nevada through the afternoon hours along with
additional shower development across north central and
northeastern Nevada late tonight into Saturday morning, moving out
and diminishing Saturday afternoon across far northeastern
Nevada. Instability and moisture are limited with this weather
feature so thunderstorm chances remain low (15% or less across the
area). Precipitable water values of 0.50" or less do not promote
much surface rainfall so rainfall will be limited as well with 10%
or less chance for wetting rains (0.10") in all valleys in
eastern Nevada. Only the East Humboldt Range and Jarbidge
Wilderness area have chances of 30-40% of a wetting rain. A modest
west wind across the area Saturday will subside Saturday night
with colder overnight lows in the 30s across much of the area ,
particularly Elko county where some freezing temperatures are
expected.

Drier conditions and lighter west winds emerge Sunday as a ridging
builds over the area with highs jumping back up into the 70s,
approaching 80 near Tonopah. Lows Sunday night will drop into the
upper 30s to 40s under clear skies.

.LONG TERM...Monday through next Friday

Weak ridging will allow for dry weather Monday and most of
Tuesday, with highs in the 70s and 80s. Tuesday an upper level
trough will move into the Pacific northwest. Some instability
along a cold front will provide a chance of isolated to scattered
showers with isolated thunderstorms across portions of northern
Nevada, in northern Elko county anytime after noon. QPF values
look minimal with any shower or storm that develops. Lows each
night will be in the 40s for much of the area.

The trough in the Pacific Northwest will progress east but remain
largely north of Nevada. Temperatures during the day will largely
remain in the upper 70s across the north, and low to mid 80s
across central Nevada. Some more isolated showers and
thunderstorm chances remain across northern Elko county Wednesday
afternoon. Night time lows will generally remain in the 40s. Dry
weather looks to continue through the end of next week.

&&

.AVIATION...VFR conditions will continue through the next 24 hours
at all terminals. -SHRA are also possible a few hours before and
including 12Z Saturday at all sites except KTPH but occurrence on
station remains low, so went with VCSH.

&&

.HYDROLOGY...Temperatures will quickly warm Sunday and early next
week and flows on many small creeks and streams are expected to
again rise, possibly into action stage for some, such as Lamoille
Creek. The lower Humboldt continues to run strong with Battle
Mountain currently in action stage and Comus forecast to enter
action stage early next week.

Wildhorse Reservoir resides in action stage and is forecast to
remain in action stage for the next several days.

The Humboldt River at Battle Mountain resides in action stage and
is forecast to remain in action stage for the next several days.
