Through December 31, 2024, the National Weather Service (NWS) in Silver Spring, MD is soliciting comments on the Experimental website for translating NWS products at: www.weather.gov/translate. The Experimental NWS Translation website is a public interface which allows users to display a range of translated NWS text products and hazard information. Spanish, Simplified Chinese, Vietnamese, and French are being translated currently, with plans for Samoan to become available in the fall of 2024. Other languages will continue to be added during the experimental period and an updated PNS will be issued. There will be opportunities to comment and review on the new capabilities. The NWS has made great strides towards accomplishing the Weather-Ready Nation goal. Being able to effectively communicate hazards and weather information to communities with Limited English Proficiency (LEP) is an important part due to the fact that the majority of NWS products are only distributed in English. To ensure access to hazardous weather information and weather forecasts for multilingual communities, the NWS use of a language model trained by Artificial Intelligence (AI) will help quickly translate English NWS products into additional languages and incorporate the technology into our operations. The language models allow quick and automated translations that can be incorporated into NWS operations, which will expand access of actionable and decision-making weather information to additional communities. A detailed description of the NWS translation website service can be found at the following link: https://nsdesk.servicenowservices.com/api/g_noa/nwspc/res2/42dc1 a7f97101a908881bb7de053af4c Feedback is requested on NWS plans to provide translation of NWS products in multiple languages to ensure all communities have access to actionable weather information.
