In 1911, from the evening of September 6th, through the morning of the 7th, Wichita was deluged by around 8 inches of rain, 7.99 inches to be exact. This had been the greatest 24 hour rainfall on record for the Air Capital until September 12th, 2008, when 10.31 inches inundated Mid Continent Airport. (Now Eisenhower Airport.) No doubt, major flash flooding occurred throughout Western Sedgwick County. In 1909, Topeka was drenched with 8.08 inches of rain in 24 hours, the greatest 24-hour total on record for the Kansas Capital. && In 1970, in St. Petersburg Florida, a football team at Gibbs High School was struck by lightning during practice.
