Fire Weather Planning Forecast for West Texas/Southeast New Mexico
National Weather Service Midland/Odessa TX
233 PM CDT Wed May 22 2024

...RED FLAG WARNING IN EFFECT FROM NOON CDT /11 AM MDT/ TO 9 PM
CDT /8 PM MDT/ THURSDAY FOR THE HIGHER TERRAIN AND ADJACENT PLAINS
OF WEST TEXAS AND SOUTHEAST NEW MEXICO FOR RELATIVE HUMIDITY VALUES
AS LOW AS 2 PERCENT, 20 FT WINDS GREATER THAN 20 MPH AND EXTREME
FIRE DANGER...

.DISCUSSION...

Elevated fire weather conditions continue this afternoon across
the higher terrain of SE NM/W TX where intermittently gusty winds
are expected to produce near critical/localized critical conditions
prior to sunset. Fire weather concerns increase Thursday as very dry
air expands across the region with widespread RH under 5 percent and
temperatures 5-10 degrees above normal. Stronger winds in the mountains
will yield periods of critical fire weather conditions there and across
the adjacent plains, thus a Red Flag Warning is in effect for the
Sacramento Foothills, Guadalupe Mtns, and adjacent areas of SE NM/W TX
Thursday afternoon. ERCs west of the Pecos are forecast to exceed the
97th percentile, lending to increased concerns, though to the east of
the Warning, greenup and lighter winds largely mitigate more substantial
fire weather concerns. Elevated conditions are possible again on Friday,
with another round of critical fire weather conditions Saturday as winds
increase across the mountains once again. Aside from storms to the east
today, the forecast through the holiday remains dry and hot.
