In 2020, a powerful cold front roared into Kansas with an early taste of winter. Temperatures tumbled more than 30 degrees from highs of 95 to near 100 degrees the day before to highs in the 50s across most of the state. Snow fell in Western Kansas that evening. More than 10 record low or record cold max temperatures were set over the next three days. One record had stood since 1890 before being broken. This marked the coldest start to September in history for Kansas. In 1989, thunderstorms that developed along a stationary front produced torrential rains in parts of Nebraska, where 5 to 9 inches drenched Lincoln. The 4.68 inches measured at the airport is a record for the date. An unofficial report of 11 inches was received from Holmes Park. Parts of Western Iowa were soaked by 6 to 6.5 inches of rain. The 5.89 inches measured in Shenandoah that set a record for the date flooded the basements of 80 to 90 percent of the homes in the area. && In 1900, the worst weather disaster in United States history during the 20th Century occurred when a hurricane powered through Galveston Texas. The hurricane produced winds around 120 mph and a 20-foot storm surge washed over the island. Most buildings were demolished or swept away and around 3,600 houses were destroyed. Damage estimates were around $30 million. Adjusting for inflation, this would equate to around $820 million. Around 6,000 people drowned in Galveston with another 1,200 killed elsewhere. Following the hurricane the surf was 300 feet inland from the former shore line. $$ Auto
