Rangeland Fire Danger Statement
National Weather Service Sioux Falls SD
443 AM CDT Mon May 20 2024

.DISCUSSION...

Low chance of isolated showers west of the James River Valley late
this morning. While dry weather will prevail for most sites through
this afternoon, there is a low chance of isolated showers and
storms developing this afternoon and evening. A front slides east
across the region today, shifting winds from southwesterly to
northwesterly. Northwest winds may gust into the teens to lower
20s this afternoon. Expect high temperatures to range from near 70
degrees to the lower 80s, but increasing moisture means afternoon
humidity levels will only fall to 50 to 65 percent.

Widespread showers and storms spread in from the west overnight
into Tuesday morning. Some storms may be strong to severe
especially overnight into early Tuesday morning. Another round of
storms may develop again Tuesday afternoon east of the James River
Valley with the main severe weather threat near and east of a line
from Marshall to Sioux Falls to Yankton. Aside from storms,
Tuesday will be cooler, cloudy, and windy with gusts in the 30s.

Seasonal conditions and some periods of low rain chances continue
for the second half of the work week.

...LOW FIRE DANGER...

The Grassland Fire Danger Index will reach the low category
this afternoon. Favorable weather conditions or a high moisture
content of grasses, and other dry organic material on the
ground, indicate that the probability of a fast moving fire is
low. Outdoor burning under these conditions can usually be
with reasonable safety precautions, but should be monitored.

OUTLOOK FOR TUESDAY AFTERNOON...The Grassland Fire Danger Index
will reach the low category.

The grassland fire danger product reflects fire danger for native
grasses. It is not intended for cured agricultural crops, nor
will it reflect conditions in road ditches which have been mowed.
