...Today`s Topic for Flood Safety Awareness Week is National
Weather Service Water Resources...

The National Weather Service, in cooperation with the Arkansas
Division of Emergency Management, has proclaimed the week of
March 25th through 29th as Flood Safety Awareness Week in Arkansas.
Each day during the week will feature information about a
different flood related topic.

...National Weather Service Water Resources...

The NWS homepage (www.weather.gov) provides up to date weather and
water advisory, watch, and warning information for the U.S. and
its territories. However the NWS provides many additional resources
to help emergency managers, public officials, and private citizens
make water decisions.

Advanced Hydrologic Prediction Service (AHPS)
---------------------------------------------

AHPS provides a suite of river and flood forecasts and water
information to protect life and property and help ensure the
nation`s economic well being.

National Water Center (NWC)
-------------------------------------------------------
The NWC’s mission is to promote collaboration across the scientific
community, serving as both a catalyst to accelerate the transition
of research into operations and a center of excellence for water
resources, state-of-the-science information, and prediction services.
These services inform essential emergency management and water resources
decisions across all time scales, including drought, low-flow risks, and
information needs for routine and long-range water management and
planning.

Weather Prediction Center (WPC) Precipitation Forecasts
-------------------------------------------------------

WPC provides precipitation forecasts for the entire U.S. and issues
excessive rainfall forecasts, short range discussions on heavy
rainfall events, and snowfall and freezing rain probabilities.

NWS River Forecast Centers (RFCs)
---------------------------------

The NWS has a network of thirteen River Forecast Centers (RFC)
across the United States. These RFCs collect, process, and provide
water resource and river forecasts and information for major river
basins.

There are two RFCs that service Arkansas. These are the Lower
Mississippi River Forecast Center and the Arkansas-Red Basin River
Forecast Center.

LMRFC covers the Lower Mississippi, White, Black, and Ouachita
River Basins.

ABRFC covers the lower Arkansas River and its tributaries.

Flood Inundation Mapping
------------------------

The longstanding demand for event driven flood inundation mapping
(FIM) has increased dramatically in recent years as a high value
source of actionable information for emergency and water resource
managers to prepare, mitigate, and respond to flood impacts. In
response, the National Water Center (NWC) of the National Weather
Service (NWS), in coordination with NWS River Forecast Centers (RFC)
and Weather Forecast Offices (WFO) along with Federal and other
partners, has developed and demonstrated high resolution inundation
modeling capabilities providing geo-referenced visualizations of
forecast flooding extent at the continental scale.
