Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Pago Pago AS
219 PM SST Fri Mar 22 2024

.Short term...
The high pressure system that continues to dominate in the region
will remain in the area through the new week. Unstable conditions
from last night follows a diminishing trend as seen on current
upper air soundings. Fair weather is also evident on satellite
data showing convective clouds pushing towards the trough to the
south, while being replaced by fair-weather cumulus clouds
pushing in from the east. Expect isolated showers and a gentle
breeze for the weekend and into the new week.

.Long term...
The aforementioned high pressure will briefly weaken in the area
on Monday. This pattern will further diminish winds, which may
allow for some afternoon showers. However, the high will
strengthen once again on Tuesday, returning stable weather
through Wednesday. By Wednesday morning, the south edge of a
trough to the north will move across the American Samoa region.
Expect an uptick in showers through Thursday, before another ridge
builds in the area once again Friday.

.Marine...
Latest wave heights of 7 to 9 feet are observed in the area via
satellite data. These heights are forecast to persist through
Saturday. Although previous discussions mentioned lower wave
heights and rough seas, only one of the two is observed. With
calm seas remaining over open waters, rough conditions did not
play out as expected. However, a High Surf Advisory is in effect
due to large surfs and rip currents observed. Because Fautasi
season is underway and many village Fautasi`s are practicing for
the race, a small craft advisory is also in effect for
precautionary purposes as well as wave heights being over 8 feet.

For the weekend, seas will fall below advisory thresholds.
However, by Tuesday a large northerly swell will move in the area,
followed by different set from the south on Wednesday.
