DROUGHT INFORMATION STATEMENT
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE GOODLAND KS
1100 AM MDT MON APR 2 2018

...UNUSUALLY DRY WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS DROUGHT AND FIRE WEATHER
CONCERNS IN MANY AREAS...

SYNOPSIS...

Well below normal precipitation since last October has resulted in
extremely dry conditions, especially in areas along and south of
Interstate 70. This has resulted in a delayed spring greenup and the
presence of abundant dry fuels which has already resulted in a very
active fire weather season. The 3-month drought outlook indicates
the likelihood of drought continuing through June south of Interstate
70.

82 percent of Kansas is now in drought compared to just 21 percent
three months ago. In Colorado, 71 percent of the state is currently
in drought compared to 16 percent three months ago.

Precipitation has been more abundant in recent months over far NE
Colorado and much of Nebraska and no drought currently exists there.

The latest drought monitor was issued on March 29th.

Drought intensity is rated on a scale from D0...abnormally dry...to

On April 1st, the National Significant Wildland Fire Potential Outlook was
issued by the National Interagency Fire Center. It indicated the potential
for above normal wildfire activity across the drought areas of northwest
Kansas and eastern Colorado for the months of April and May, then near
normal activity for the month of June. Periods of concern will be wind
events coupled with low humidities that impact fire activity.

AGRICULTURAL...

On March 13th, Kansas governor Jeff Colyer signed a drought declaration for
all 105 counties in the state of Kansas to provide assistance to farmers and
ranchers as they cope with the impact the drought will continue to have
on crops and livestock.

Locally, Greeley, Wichita and Wallace counties were placed under a drought
warning, while Sherman, Thomas, Sheridan, Graham, Logan, Gove, Cheyenne,
Rawlins, Decatur and Norton counties were placed under a drought watch.

PRECIPITATION AND TEMPERATURE OUTLOOKS...

The latest outlooks were made by the Climate Prediction Center on
March 15th.

The three month outlook is valid April 2018 through June 2018...
