Area Forecast Discussion...RESENT
National Weather Service Elko NV
320 AM PDT Tue Mar 26 2024

.SYNOPSIS...A mix of scattered graupel, snow and rain showers are
expected again today for much of northeastern Nevada. Significant
accumulation is not expected in valleys with mountains only
getting a few inches through today. A warmup and dry conditions
with gusty winds are expected Wednesday ahead of another low
pressure system that will bring cooler temperatures and more rain
and snow to the area for the remainder of the week.

&&

.SHORT TERM...Today through Wednesday nit

Scattered snow and graupel showers are observed across the area
this morning. Expansion and intensification after 18Z is expected
again today with showers moving to the southeast accompanied by
gusty surface winds from the west-northwest at 15-25 mph.
Instability is limited again today so lightning is not expected.
A mid-level ridge will build over the area tonight into Wednesday
bringing dry conditions and a switch in wind direction. Southwest
winds will increase from the southwest Wednesday under increasing
cloud cover. The next Pacific low pressure system will follow the
short term ridge bringing more rain and snow to northern Nevada
late Tuesday night. Temperatures today will be below normal in
the 40s once again with lows in the 20s. Rising 500 mb heights
and robust surface winds will allow temperatures to climb into the
50s despite increasing cloud cover through the day.

.LONG TERM...Thursday through next Tuesday

On-and-off again showers continue through the latter half of the
week, over the weekend, and into the beginning of next week.
Isolated rain showers are expected Thursday through Monday with
rain throughout the day and could transition over to snow
overnight, especially in the higher terrain and mountains. Models
still showing great confidence that the low pressure system over
the weekend will head east by Monday, and Tuesday is expected to
have clearer skies as models are showing an upper level ridge
building right after, giving a much needed break from the weather.

Temperatures expected to gradually rise, with highs starting in
the 40s to 50s Thursday and slowly rising into the 60s by Tuesday.
Lows expected to remain in the upper 20s to 30s all period.

Breezy winds Thursday across the region with westerly winds at
15-20 mph with gusts as high as 25 mph. Friday and Saturday,
breezy winds over N. Nye County and White Pine County at 15-20 mph
with gusts as high as 30 mph, lighter winds below 10 mph for
northern Nevada both days. Sunday and Monday expected to have
lighter winds at 5-10 mph. Tuesday, light winds.

.AVIATION...Isolated light snow showers generally linger across
the region through Wednesday with VCSH and/or -SHRASN to -SHSN
forecast at terminals at various times. VFR forecast as primary
flight category although CIGS and VIS lowering with passing
showers and showers that move on terminal may briefly drop the
flight category to MVFR and even IFR given a stronger shower.
Light to breezy NW breezes tomorrow at 5KT to 15KT with gusts
around 20 knots across the state. KTPH and KELY will see higher
winds at 10KT to 20KT with gusts approaching 30 knots.
