...ON THIS DATE IN WEATHER HISTORY...

In 1890, a prairie fire burned from Selden, Kansas, northeast
to the Platte River in Nebraska. The fire crossed the Republican River
near McCook, Nebraska, and kept moving northeast, pushed by
strong southwest winds.

In 1957, a blizzard developed over western Kansas. Over a foot
of snow fell from Hoxie to Hill City. Roads were closed and did not
reopen for three days. Phone lines were down. Winds drifted snow to
15 feet high. One person perished north of Hoxie. Heavy snow was
also reported over Wallace County.
