Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Elko NV
220 AM PDT Sat Mar 23 2024

.SYNOPSIS...Cold front continues to progress thru the forecast
area today with the best chance of accumulating valley snow in White
Pine County tonight. Weather remains active thru the foreacst
period with a brief break Wednesday under a transient upper ridge.

&&

.SHORT TERM...Tonight through Sunday night.

Cold front continues to progress thru the forecast area today as
the associated deep upper trof moves eastward. Gusty winds today
with gusts around 30 to 35 mph along with valley rain and
eventually a rain/snow mix for portions of eastern Nevada. Snow
present in the higher elevations. Band of precipitation transits
the forecast area in conjunction with the cold front with the main
band exiting the forecast area to the southeast around midnight
tonight. That said, snow showers linger thru the night, primarily
over the high terrain. Higher precipitation amounts expected thru
Saturday night in and near White Pine County along with isolated
thunderstorms forecast during the afternoon and evening as
numerical solutions indicate a region of enhanced instability
along the front. Graupel expected under any thunderstorm activity
with enough falling to produce light accumulations of a tenth of
an inch or two. Rain more effectively transitions to snow after
sunset in and near White Pine County based on the timing of the
progression of the front. Greater impacts expected with valley
rain/snow mix and snow forecast Saturday night and slushy
conditions look to develop on higher elevation roads. Otherwise,
minimal impact expected from snow on most roadways below 5500 feet
across the forecast area Saturday and Saturday night.

Lingering isolated snow showers continue Sunday morning with an
increase in instability showers across the forecast area during
the afternoon. Significant valley snow accumulations are not
anticipated though pass routes may see accumulations of less than
an inch. Chilly and strong northwesterly winds in place Sunday
with gusts 25 to 30 mph.

Cooler temperatures in store with daytime highs today in the low
40s to low 50s and overnight lows in the 20s. Daytime highs Sunday
reside in the upper 30s to upper 40s with overnight lows again in
the 20s.

.LONG TERM...Monday through next Friday

Active weather continues Monday and Tuesday as the back side of
the passing trough brings a mix of light rain and snow to valleys,
with a few more inches of snow to the higher mountains. Minor
impacts from snow are expected during the Monday night through
Tuesday mid-morning hours, during which time some of the valley
locations of mainly Elko, Lander and Eureka counties could see a
quarter inch to an inch of new snow. Summits in these counties
could see up to 2 inches of snow in the same period. Winds both
Monday and Tuesday afternoon will be W-NW 10-15mph gusting
25-30mph across most of the region.

Showers taper off later on Tuesday as high pressure begins to
build in from the west. Increasing southwesterly flow early on
Wednesday. By Wednesday afternoon the brief ridging begins to exit
NV, east into Utah. The next round of shower activity is expected
to reach Humboldt county by Wednesday afternoon as broad trough
energy pushes in from the west. The associated cold front is
expected to traverse the CWA from NW to SE Wednesday and Thursday.
Noticeably cooler on Thursday. Similar to the system early in the
week, the mid-week system will bring rain or a rain snow mix to
valleys, with mountain snowfall likewise heaviest across Elko
county terrain. Shower activity lingers over the region Friday on
through the weekend.

.AVIATION...VFR conditions will be the primary flight conditions
through early Saturday morning. CIGs are lowering to around 5000
feet across N NV by morning. Light -RA showers will begin for
terminals along the I-80 corridor around 12Z to 15Z Saturday with
VCSH reaching KTPH and KELY at about 17Z to 20Z. Flight conditions
will degrade Saturday afternoon through Sunday with periods of
MVFR to IFR conditions possible for all terminals, especially as
-RA changes over to -SN behind a cold front that will shift
windsout of the NW at 5KT to 15 KT with gusts up to 30 KT.
