Weather Summary for Iowa
National Weather Service Des Moines IA
353 AM CDT Sat Apr 13 2024

Today:

Skies were clear across Iowa overnight. Temperatures heading toward
daybreak were fairly typical for the middle of April for the time
being with readings from the 30s north to around 50 degrees south.
Winds early this morning were either light and variable, or south to
southeast at 5 to 15 mph.

Sunny conditions are expected to start the day with temperatures in
the 60s by mid to late morning. It will be a warm and breezy afternoon
under partly to mostly sunny skies with south winds gusting 25 to 35
mph north, boosting highs across the state into the 70s northeast and
the lower to middle 80s elsewhere. The combination of warm
temperatures, breezy south winds, low humidities, and generally dry
vegetation will combine to produce very high to extreme fire weather
conditions over portions of northern Iowa by afternoon. Any fires
that develop have the potential to spread rapidly.

Tonight and beyond:

Outside of lighter winds, which will become northerly, Sunday will be
very much like today with warm temperatures and plenty of sunshine. Highs
across the region should vary from the 70s northeast to 80s
southwest. Chances for showers and thunderstorms will increase late
Monday however with showers and thunderstorms likely Monday night into
Tuesday. Some of those storms may be strong to severe across the
Midwest. Highs will again be in the 70s or 80s Monday, and then the
60s or 70s Tuesday.

The outlook for later next week calls for a drying and cooling trend
with more seasonal temperatures. Temperatures are expected to dip back
into the 50s for highs and the 30s for lows.
