738 FXUS62 KKEY 281430 AFDKEY Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Key West FL 1030 AM EDT Sun Apr 28 2024 ...New DISCUSSION, MARINE, AVIATION... .DISCUSSION... Issued at 1030 AM EDT Sun Apr 28 2024 Windy conditions continue across the Keys this morning with KBYX radar detecting a few showers over the Straits of Florida, mainly south of the Lower and Middle Keys. These showers are moving to the west to northwest near 10 knots. Temperatures along the Island Chain are in the upper 70s with dew points in the mid to upper 60s. Strong surface high pressure is currently sitting just off the North Carolina coastline this morning. As a result, marine platforms around the Keys are observing mainly easterly breezes near 20 knots with occasional gusts to near 25 knots with Island Chain communities observing 15 to 20 mph with occasional gusts to near 30 mph. .SHORT TERM FORECAST... The 12z RAOB from this morning shows a fairly moist profile from the surface up to 825 mb before drying out above this layer. There is another moist layer present from approximately 365 mb to 350 mb which can be on GOES 16 Visible satellite imagery this morning in the form of some high cirrus streaming from west to east through the Florida Keys. There is also some very weak veering to the wind profile with sustained winds of near 25 knots which is leading to some speed convergence over the Straits which may be partly responsible for the current ongoing showers. Therefore, the ongoing forecast remains on track with no changes expected with this update. && .MARINE... Issued at 1030 AM EDT Sun Apr 28 2024 A Small Craft Advisory remains in effect for all the Florida Keys coastal waters through this afternoon. From synopsis, a sprawling high pressure system centered southeast of New England will maintain fresh to occasionally strong easterly breezes this afternoon through tonight. As the high presses south into the western North Atlantic, breezes will slacken, although occasionally fresh breezes will continue through the first half of the week. && .AVIATION... (15Z TAFS) Issued at 1030 AM EDT Sun Apr 28 2024 VFR conditions will prevail at both EYW and MTH through the TAF period. There is a chance for passing showers at either terminal that could briefly deteriorate conditions to MVFR cigs or vis today going into this evening. Near surface winds will continue to be easterly and gusty to near 25 knots. && .CLIMATE... The Key West International Airport recorded .01 inches of rain yesterday. This is the first measurable precipitation recorded at the airport since .55 inches was recorded on April 4th, over three weeks ago. && .PRELIMINARY POINT TEMPS/POPS...
