...Changes to River forecasts and a new website for viewing water
data in 2024...

There are a few changes coming for the 2024 runoff season that
will impact River forecasts and how you view water data on
National Weather Service websites.

River forecasts will change to using 3 days of precipitation in
the forecast starting April 1, 2024. Previously 5 days of
precipitation was used in the forecast. River forecasts will also
reduce from showing 10 days of forecast data, to showing 7 days.
These changes were made to improve the quality of the forecasts,
and reduce the frequency of anamolous river rises due to higher
uncertainty precipitation forecasts, in the day 4 through 5 range.

The other change is to the way water data will be viewed on our
web page, from the current AHPS to the new National Water
Prediction Service (NWPS). This change over will occur Wednesday
March 27, 2024. The website https://water.noaa.gov/ will
switch over automatically from AHPS to NWPS at that time.

For additional information on the NWPS website go to:
https://weather.gov/owp/operations and scroll down to the NWPS
section.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding these changes
please contact our office at 406-652-0851 , or email us at
nws.billings@noaa.gov , and we will be happy to assist you.
