URGENT - WINTER WEATHER MESSAGE
National Weather Service Des Moines IA
1007 AM CDT Sun Mar 24 2024

...Impactful Wintry Weather Expected Across Parts of Iowa
Today...

.Although a wintry mix with a light glazing of ice has been
reported in parts of central to northern Iowa this morning, snow
will continue to increase this morning over parts of north central
Iowa moving north to northeast with time through the morning
hours. High snowfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour may occur
over a 1 to 3 hour time window in some areas which would lead to
travel conditions quickly deteriorating and becoming treacherous.
There is the potential for a moderate to even a heavy band of snow
to set up across parts of the area and thundersnow may occur.
Currently the most favored area for a heavier band appears to be
somewhere from the Boone to Ames northwards towards Fort Dodge
areas then northeastward towards Mason City and Waverly. Will
continue to monitor that situation. The winds will become gusty at
times today with gusts up to around 35-40 mph. Blowing snow is
not expected to be a big impact due to the heavy and wet nature of
the snow.

Warmer air will be arriving from south to north today and
tonight. Therefore, the snow will gradually transition to rain in
central Iowa by late morning to midday. Stay tuned to continued
updates on this impactful winter weather.
