...ON THIS DATE IN WEATHER HISTORY...

In 1991, the infamous Wichita/Andover Tornado roared
into history. The deadliest of 55 tornadoes to occur
that day, the vicious F5 twister had a track 46 miles
long and reached one half mile wide. It killed 17,
injured 225, and caused an estimated $300 million damage
of which $62 million occurred at McConnell Air Force
Base. Of the 17 deaths, 13 occurred at the Golden Spur
Mobile Home Park in Andover. A second F5 tornado that
ran roughshod across North Central Oklahoma was even more
violent. Known as the Red Rock Tornado, its track was 66
miles long and reached nearly one mile wide. The massive
twister leveled two farms and scoured pavement off a
highway. A portable Doppler radar measured 257 to 286
MPH winds inside the vortex which, at the time, were the
strongest winds ever measured on Earth. Fortunately it
remained primarily in rural areas, for had it invaded a
city or town, the destruction and loss of life would have
no doubt been catastrophic.

&&

In 1989, the world`s deadliest tornado went on a rampage
through the Manikganj District of Bangladesh, where it
killed an estimated 1,300 and injured around 12,000!
