...ON THIS DATE IN WEATHER HISTORY...

In 1948, for the second time in 5 days, a strong tornado
struck Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma City.Occurring
just 100 yards from the tornado that occurred on March
20th, this twister struck 84 aircraft, of which 35 were
destroyed.  Damage totaled around $6 million.  It was the
first tornado ever successfully forecast, ushering in the
modern era of forecasting severe thunderstorms and
tornadoes.
