...NWS Damage Survey for April 10, 2024 Update #2...

.Overview...
Five additional tornado damage paths have been confirmed across
portions of Harrison and Jackson Counties in Mississippi and West
Feliciana Parish in Louisiana. Four new tornadoes were identified
while the track for two previously-confirmed tornadoes were
revised and connected into one long-tracked tornado between Pointe
Coupee and West Feliciana Parishes. Of particular note, high
resolution satellite imagery showed the track of the Labarre-
Spillman, LA tornado was much longer than the initial ground
survey revealed. Consequently, the updated path length increased
from 9 miles to 32 miles with the tornado touching down just south
of Morganza, LA in Pointe Coupee Parish and dissipating shortly
after it crosses into Wilkinson County, Mississippi. The most
significant damage occurred between Bains, LA and Spillman, LA as
identified via high resolution satellite imagery and initial
ground survey. The tornadoes in Harrison County were identified
using high-resolution satellite imagery which aligned with ground-
surveyed damage points in the area. An apparently weak, but
unrated tornado was also identified in Jackson County, MS which
tracked over rural mostly inaccessible lands. Possible tornado
damage was also identified in Innis, LA which will require further
investigation.

Further adjustments to peak intensity are possible especially
with the long-tracked tornado where another damage survey team is
planning to revisit the area on Monday. This will assist in
finalizing the peak intensity and an increase to an EF-2 rating
tornado in West Feliciana Parish is likely.

End Lat/Lon: 31.0152 / -91.2345

Survey Summary:
A strong and long-lived tornado tracked across portions of Pointe
Coupee and West Feliciana Parishes carving out a nearly 33-mile-
long path with a maximum width of approximately 1 mile just
southwest of Spillman, LA. Per NDVI differencing on satellite
analysis, this tornado formed south of Morganza, LA within a
powerful line of thunderstorms and quickly moved northeast over
mainly rural lands before causing more substantial tree damage as
it crossed Morganza Hwy. The tree damage became increasingly more
widespread and intense as the tornado crossed Levee Road and the
Mississippi River. High resolution satellite imagery identified a
focused swath of tree damage roughly 400 yards in width that
continued northeast through the Cat Island National Wildlife
Refuge up through US Highway 61. Tree damage was observed on
Highway 61 with another large swath of tree damage further
northeast on Bains Road. Due to the heavily wooded and rural
areas, ground surveys were impeded in identifying parts of this
track as it continued northeast. The tornado quickly grew in size
thereafter and the most significant damage began after the
tornado crossed Polk Brannon Road. The ground survey was able to
access along Spillman Road and Jones Vaughn Creek Road where numerous
trees were snapped, large hardwood trees were uprooted, and
several wooden electrical transmission poles were snapped. The
peak width of the damage path was measured in this vicinity with
widespread damage evident along a mile wide swath. Ground surveys
were impeded near Spillman, LA due to widespread tree damage from this
tornado, but the damage path and track remained wide and
significant as it tracked northeast along Highway 421. High
resolution satellite analysis was used to provide the end point
for this tornado in which the tornado finally lifted after
crossing into rural parts of Wilkinson County in Mississippi.

.Bains, LA Tornado...

Rating: EF1
Estimated Peak Wind: 100 mph
Path Length /statute/: 4.43 miles
Path Width /maximum/: 350 yards
Fatalities: 0
Injuries: 0

Start Date: 04/10/2024
Start Time: 08:08 AM CDT
Start Location: 4 WNW St. Francisville / West Feliciana Parish / LA
Start Lat/Lon: 30.8092 / -91.4376

End Date: 04/10/2024
End Time: 08:12 AM CDT
End Location: 3 SSW Wakefield / West Feliciana Parish / LA
End Lat/Lon: 30.8401 / -91.3737

Survey Summary:
High resolution satellite analysis in conjunction with radar
imagery and ground survey aided in the confirmation of another
tornado that impacted Bains, LA. NDVI difference mapping helped
to identify the starting point of this tornado along the bend of
Bayou Sara. The tornado then quickly tracked northeast into Bains
where it crossed US Highway 61 causing primarily tree damage near
an elementary school. Additional damage was not accessible due to
Marydale Road being closed, but high resolution satellite imagery
did identify a localized swath of tree damage near Alexander
Creek tracking just west of the larger tornado that occurred in
this area.

.Dedeaux, MS Tornado...

Rating: EF0
Estimated Peak Wind: 85 mph
Path Length /statute/: 5.07 miles
Path Width /maximum/: 150 yards
Fatalities: 0
Injuries: 0

Start Date: 04/10/2024
Start Time: 10:40 AM CDT
Start Location: 8 NNE Diamondhead / Harrison County / MS
Start Lat/Lon: 30.5009 / -89.3236

End Time: 10:46 AM CDT
End Location: 7 WSW Lyman / Harrison County / MS
End Lat/Lon: 30.4816 / -89.244

Survey Summary:
As the mesovortex tracked east into Harrison County, another
tornado developed on the trailing flank of it and tracked east-
southeast over primarily inaccessible rural land near the Wolf
River. High resolution satellite imagery NDVI differencing
identified a scalloped path that starts near F Malley Road in
Dedeaux, MS and continues east-southeast where a ground survey
identified snapped trees as well as a mobile home that had slid
off its blocks. The tornado crossed River Road with minimal
damage evident although the track remained visible on NDVI
differencing as it crossed the Wolf River. The apparent track of
the tornado continues east across Wolf River Road and appears to
conclude just short of Alcede Lizana Road.

.Lizana, MS Tornado...

Rating: EF1
Estimated Peak Wind: 100 mph
Path Length /statute/: 1.48 miles

End Location: 7 W Lyman / Harrison County / MS
End Lat/Lon: 30.511 / -89.2528

Survey Summary:
NDVI differencing has helped to identify a tornado damage path
that aligned with ground survey of a rolled manufactured home in
Harrison County. This brief tornado quickly raced southeast also
causing tree damage across Northrup Cuevas Road, just north of a
longer-lived tornado that tracked near Wolf River.

.Jackson County Tornado...

Rating: EF-Unknown
Estimated Peak Wind: Unknown
Path Length /statute/: 2.22 miles
Path Width /maximum/: 75 Yards
Fatalities: 0
Injuries: 0

Start Date: 04/10/2024
Start Time: 11:14 AM CDT

End Location: 8 WNW Vancleave / Jackson County / MS
End Lat/Lon: 30.5982 / -88.7913

Survey Summary:
An apparent damage path visible on high resolution satellite
imagery via NDVI differencing in conjunction with KMOB radar
imagery helped to confirm the existence of a weak tornado that
tracked through rural parts of the Jackson County on April 10,
2024. No damage indicators could be identified with this analysis
and the tornado thus could not be rated.
