143 FXUS65 KLKN 011959 AFDLKN Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Elko NV 1259 PM PDT Wed May 1 2024 .SYNOPSIS...Look for a weak upper-level disturbance to move just north of northern Nevada. This will bring a few rain and higher elevation snow showers to this area along with gusty west winds across central Nevada Thursday. Dry and warmer for Friday before a robust low pressure system brings active weather and much cooler temperatures into the region over the weekend. && .SHORT TERM...Tonight through Thursday night. Skies are mostly sunny across the forecast area today. Winds will continue to remain breezy for the rest of the afternoon though will diminish during the overnight hours. Clouds are expected to be on the increase tonight with overnight lows in the 20s and 30s. For Thursday and Thursday night, a shortwave upper trough will be moving southeast through the flow. This will bring isolated to scattered light showers across mainly northern Nevada, along and north of I-80. The valley locations will see light rain or sprinkles. Winds will be breezy to locally windy with west to northwest winds of 15 to 25 mph with gusts of 30 to 40 mph. Highs will be in the 50s and 60s. The threat for rain showers will shift east through Thursday night with showers ending from west to east in northern Nevada. Clouds are expected to scatter out during the overnight with lows in the 20s and 30s. .LONG TERM...Friday through next Wednesday. A shortwave ridge is expected to move through the area quickly on Friday, bringing quiet and dry conditions to the region. Winds will be less than 20 mph and high temperatures will be in the 60s and 70s. A fairly potent upper level low pressure system will be moving east, bringing and increase in the cloudiness Saturday morning. Winds are expected to remain light with lows in the 30s and 40s. On Saturday, the upper low is forecast just west of Oregon. Out ahead of the system, strong southwest winds will develop across northern and central Nevada. Wind gusts to 50 mph are possible across central Nevada with wind gusts to 35 mph in northern Nevada. Afternoon highs will be warm with readings in the 70s. This is looking like a fairly wet system with amounts of a quarter to half inch of precipitation for Saturday with snow levels remaining above 8500 to 9000 feet. Winds will be strong to very strong with speeds of 30 to 40 mph with gusts in the 50s mph. For Saturday night through Monday, the upper level system is expected to move across the forecast area through this timeframe. Look for snow levels lower to about 4500 to 5000 feet during the night. Light snow showers are possible in the valley locations with some of the locations in central Nevada receiving one to three inches along US Highway 50. Highs Sunday and Monday will be in the 40s and 50s, with lows in the 20s and 30s. Northwest flow continues for Monday through Wednesday with light off and on showers over the region. Highs will be in the 50s and 60s with lows in the 20s and 30s. Winds will be breezy to locally windy each afternoon with gusts of 30 to 40 mph in the windier locales. && .AVIATION...Look for VFR conditions through the 24 hour period. VCSH possible across the northern TAF sites of KWMC-KBAM-KEKO by late morning. Winds will increase after 18Z W-NW10-20G30-35KT. && .HYDROLOGY...Elevated flows continue across several streams, creeks, and rivers throughout northern and central Nevada due to continued snow melt. Colder temperatures, mostly in the 20s, are expected tonight with high probabilities of near 100% of falling to or below freezing which will inhibit rapid snow melt. Dry conditions are expected across northern Nevada today. A weather disturbance will bring a few showers to northeastern Nevada Thursday but will only a few hundredths of an inch is expected across the Jarbidge area. The Humboldt River at Battle Mountain is currently in minor flood stage and is forecast remain in minor flood stage for the next several days. The Humboldt River at Comus continues to slowly rise and is now in minor flood stage and is expected to remain within minor flood stage. The Owyhee River near Wildhorse is currently in action stage and is forecast to gradually fall over the next several days, but remain in action stage. The Owyhee River near Mountain City has fallen below minor flood stage and is expected to gradually fall further through this week, but remain in action stage. && .LKN Watches/Warnings/Advisories...
