Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Elko NV
101 AM PDT Fri May 10 2024

.SYNOPSIS...Look for another round of isolated to scattered
afternoon rain showers and isolated thunderstorms this afternoon
and early evening, along with afternoon breezes. The warming
trend will continue throughout the weekend. Mostly dry and quiet
weather is expected next week though there is a low probability
for afternoon isolated rain showers and thunderstorms.

&&

.SHORT TERM...Today through Saturday night. Skies are partly
cloudy to mostly clear at this time. For today, upper level low
pressure will be spinning across southeastern Utah. This closed
low pressure system will meander to the west and will take up a
position in southern Nevada later this evening. Isolated to
scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms will develop over
eastern and central Nevada. Rainfall accumulations will be light.
Highs will be in the 60s and 70s. Winds will be out of the east
and northeast 10 to 20 mph with gusts to 30 mph for much of the
area. Conditions will settle for the overnight with lows in the
30s and 40s.

The upper level low is forecast to shift east for Saturday and
Saturday night with isolated showers mainly confined to eastern
Nevada and portions of central Nevada, though again rainfall
amounts will be rather light. Highs will be in the 60s and 70s
with north to northeast winds gusting to 25 mph. Quieter
conditions will ensue for Saturday night with lows in the 40s.

.LONG TERM...Sunday through next Friday. Upper level ridging is
forecast to move over northern and central Nevada on Sunday. This
will bring warm conditions in the 70s and 80s and occasionally
breezy winds with gusts to 20 mph. Quiet and clear conditions
persist for the night with lows in the 40s.

On Monday, all models are showing an upper trough moving through
northern and central Nevada. Isolated to scattered showers and
isolated thunderstorms are possible mainly in northeastern Nevada.
Amounts are expected to remain light with highs in the 70s and
80s. Northwest winds will be around 10 to 20 mph with gusts to 30
mph.

For Tuesday and beyond, high pressure over the Pacific will
gradually propagate eastward, bringing continued spring-like
conditions to the state. Highs will generally be in the upper 70s
to low 80s through the week, with quiet weather, and lows in the
40s.

.AVIATION...Northeasterly winds this afternoon of 6-16kts gusting
15-22kts across the region. Showers today will be focused mainly
over central NV, with a 35% chance for KELY, 20% at KTPH, 10% at
KEKO, and 5-10% at KWMC and KBAM. Any shower activity will be
light, though possibly mixed with small hail in any thunderstorms
that may develop over central NV.

KWMC remains AMD NOT SKED due to a communications issue.

&&

.HYDROLOGY...Elevated flows continue across several streams, creeks,
and rivers throughout northern and central Nevada due to seasonal
snow melt. Temperature forecasts for the upcoming weekend and
into early next week depict spring-like temperatures into the 70s
and possibly the low 80s in some spots. Given the amount of high
elevation snowpack remaining, look for runoff to increase, causing
continued elevated flows for many area streams and rivers across
northern and central Nevada.

The Humboldt River at Battle Mountain resides in action stage and
is forecast remain in action stage for the next several days.

The Humboldt River at Comus is in action stage and is forecast to
remain in action stage for the next few days.

Wildhorse Dam currently resides in action stage and is forecast
to remain in action stage for the next several days.
