Fire Weather Planning Forecast for NW Oregon and SW Washington
National Weather Service Portland OR
257 PM PDT Mon May 21 2018

.BROADCAST DISCUSSION...High pressure over the region tomorrow
brings the warmest day of the week. Deep surface marine layer and
general onshore flow will keep humidity in check. Breezy winds
along the central coast today and tomorrow. Cascade thunderstorms
possible Wednesday along with breezy winds for the central Gorge.
Mid-level Haines 6 across the valley tomorrow.

.DISCUSSION...No major concerns this week, but a few minor ones.
Did not make significant changes for the afternoon package aside
from general modifications of thunderstorm potential areas plus a
general lowering of temperatures/increasing humidity for later in
the week. Conditions will generally favor select prescribed burn
plans, especially on south and west aspects. Upper ridge nosing
over the PacNW early this week will favor broadcast burning
assuming fuels are ready. The higher Cascades may be in the best
shape today and tomorrow with the marine layer concentrating
clouds across the lower elevations despite this morning`s Salem
sounding providing evidence of the layer reaching 5000 feet. A
thermal trough has pushed northward up the California coast and
will bring gusty winds mainly to the central coast today and
somewhat less tomorrow. Mid-level instability will move inland
tomorrow as well bringing Mid-level haines 6 conditions over the
valley where temperatures will be warmest.

A modest pattern change arrives Wednesday as a very weak upper
low drifts northward and brings deeper instability over the area.
Thunderstorms will be possible over the Cascades, but individual
cells will not likely last long. Perhaps long enough to produce a
strike or two hitting the ground. Feel storms will be slow enough
to produce a modest rain. Westerly pressure gradients across the
Gorge ramp up as well with breezy winds expected for the central
Gorge. Thursday is shaping up to start off with thunderstorms
perhaps looking a little more interesting as the cells will
continue to be slow moving, but with enough upper level support to
perhaps see an isolated LAL 3 cell, mainly over the southern
Willamette. Friday, an upper trough will extend south to cover the
region with perhaps a closed low component south of our area.
Will thus see showers and some threat of central Cascade
thunderstorms continue Friday and maybe Saturday. For Sunday and
Memorial Day, models generally agree on a drier pattern
returning. /JBonk
