Weather Summary for Iowa
National Weather Service Des Moines IA
428 AM CDT Sun May 5 2024

Today:

It has been a very quiet night across the region. Skies are virtually
clear, but a few patches of fog have developed in some areas. Winds
are nearly calm and temperatures have fallen into the upper 30s to
lower 40s across Iowa.

Today will be quite pleasant for most outdoor interests. Skies will
remain mostly sunny and winds will eventually come around to southeast
this afternoon, but remain around 10 mph or less. Temperatures will
peak in the upper 60s, right around seasonal normals for early May.

Tonight and beyond:

With sustained southeast breezes tonight temperatures will only fall
into the mid 40s to lower 50s, then on Monday the winds will increase
to 15 to 25 mph and gusty during the afternoon, and temperatures will
rise into the lower 70s making for a mild but breezy day.
Thunderstorms are then forecast to spread into southwestern Iowa late
Monday afternoon or evening, and move across the remainder of the
state Monday night. Severe weather will be possible with these storms,
primarily in the form of damaging winds but with tornadoes also
possible. The highest threat of severe weather will be in the
southwest, only gradually diminishing toward the northeast overnight.
Lower thunderstorm chances will then linger on Tuesday and Wednesday,
with high temperatures generally in the upper 60s to mid 70s each of
those days.
