Rangeland Fire Danger Statement
National Weather Service Sioux Falls SD
434 AM CDT Mon Apr 23 2018

.DISCUSSION...
Warmer temperatures are expected today, and humidity levels could
drop into the 25 to 40 percent range over much of the region as a
result. The exception will be over southwest Minnesota into the
Iowa Great Lakes, where lingering snow cover will keep
temperatures somewhat cooler.

A compact upper wave will bring a good chance of rain late
tonight and Tuesday, especially for areas west of Interstate 29.
The most widespread precipitation is expected near/west of the
James River, where rainfall amounts of a quarter to half an inch
are possible. Another wave on Thursday will be accompanied by
gusty winds of 20 to 35 mph, which may result in elevated fire
danger Thursday afternoon.

Seasonal temperatures will stick around through the remainder of
the week, with warmer readings and increasing southerly flow on
the horizon for next weekend. With fuels just starting to come
out of dormancy, will have to watch for elevated fire danger by
next weekend and early next week as well.

...MODERATE FIRE DANGER...

The Grassland Fire Danger Index will reach the moderate
category this afternoon. Marginal weather conditions or a
moderate moisture content of grasses and other dry organic
material on the ground...indicate that there is some potential
for a fire occurrence. Do not leave outdoor fires unattended
under these conditions.

OUTLOOK FOR TUESDAY AFTERNOON...The Grassland Fire Danger Index
will reach the high category.

The grassland fire danger product reflects fire danger for native
grasses. It is not intended for cured agricultural crops, nor
will it reflect conditions in road ditches which have been mowed.

...LOW FIRE DANGER...

The Grassland Fire Danger Index will reach the low category
this afternoon. Favorable weather conditions or a high moisture
content of grasses and other dry organic material on the
ground indicate that the probability of a fire occurrence is low.
Outdoor burning under these conditions can usually be performed
with reasonable safety precautions.

OUTLOOK FOR TUESDAY AFTERNOON...The Grassland Fire Danger Index
will reach the low to moderate category.

The grassland fire danger product reflects fire danger for native
grasses. It is not intended for cured agricultural crops, nor
will it reflect conditions in road ditches which have been mowed.
