.DISCUSSION...
Issued at 253 PM CST Sat Dec 13 2025

A shallow cold surge will become a a little deeper this evening
as cold advection causes temperatures. Low clouds will hold
through mid to late evening and some light freezing drizzle or
light snow are possible early before the deeper moisture moves
out, with best chances along I-70. Chances for measurable
precipitation are very low; but a few slick spots can`t be ruled
out. Skies will clear later tonight with winds becoming light,
allowing temperatures to drop into the teens. Winds will shift
from the south Sunday as the mid level flow becomes more zonal
and a surface trough forms in the lee of the Rockies. The south
winds will only be recirculating cool air around high pressure
so that highs will range from the lower 30s in central Kansas to
the lower 40s along the Colorado state line.

Persistent zonal flow at mid levels will eventually lead to low
level warming as the boundary layer flow becomes more westerly.
Expect highs in the 50s and 60s Monday and 60s Tuesday and
Wednesday. A few places in far southwest Kansas could approach
70. A shortwave trough will traverse the plains Wednesday night
and push another dry cold front through the high plains, leading
to cooler highs in the 50s Thursday. However, the mid level
flow will become strong westerly by Friday and Saturday, leading
to surface troughing and warmer weather, with highs in the 60s
to lower 70s.

Aside from trace or very light precipitation amounts this
evening, the various ensemble means show no measurable
precipitation for the next 10 days, with rain chances near 0%
each day.

.AVIATION /00Z TAFS THROUGH 00Z SUNDAY/...
Issued at 526 PM CST Sat Dec 13 2025

Tricky TAF forecast is expected through at least the first
portions of the TAF period. Varying visibilities down to 3/4 to
2.5 miles have been reported across multiple sites across
southwest Kansas this afternoon. The expectation is for freezing
drizzle, fog, reduced visibilities, and low CIGs to continue
through at least through the evening at times. TAF sites have
been bouncing around between MVFR/IFR/LIFR. Improving conditions
are expected as we progress through the evening, though areas of
fog reducing visibilities is still a potential overnight. Winds
are breezy now, around 15 knots with higher gusts to 25 knots,
but expectation is for winds to diminish through the night and
even shift more southerly through Sunday morning. Winds will
increase again midday to around 10-15 knots.
