.DISCUSSION...
Issued at 438 AM CDT Wed Apr 17 2024

Yesterday`s storm system will continue to lift to the northeast
today, with an upper trough settling in over the northwestern CONUS.
Zonal flow will set up over the Central Plains today, with the
trough pushing south into portions of Wyoming, Nebraska, and the
Dakotas. Expect unseasonably warm temperatures this afternoon
(upper 60s north of Hwy 2 to mid-70s in north central Kansas).
Normal high temperatures are typically in the low to mid-60s. A
cold front will move across the region this afternoon and evening,
kicking off a few showers and thunderstorms across the Hastings
County Warning Area. There is a chance that a few storms could
become strong to marginally severe, particularly for the
southeastern portions of the CWA. The primary hazards expected with
any storms that develop will be hail and gusty winds. Low
temperatures tonight are expected to range from the mid-30s in the
northwest to the mid-40s in the southeast. With temperatures
expected to be in the mid-30s, a few locations may see a few
snowflakes mixed in with the rain.

The cold frontal passage will usher in cooler air to the region,
which will remain in place through at least the end of the week.
High temperatures Thursday through Saturday will be mainly in the
40s and 50s. Lows will be mainly in the 20s and 30s. Additionally,
the broad upper trough will remain in place over the area through
the start of the weekend. A few weak impulses of energy are
expected to move through the area over these days, bringing low
chances (20-40%) to at least a portion of the area each day. This
does not mean that one location will or will not receive
precipitation each day.

Heading into Sunday and the extended forecast, the upper trough will
shift to the east. We are expected to come under northwest flow,
with an upper ridge setting up over the western CONUS. Expect some
warmer temperatures these days, with highs returning to the 60s and
possibly the 70s in some locations. Lows will be in the 30s and
40s. Periodic chances for showers and thunderstorms will continue
through the end of the forecast period. As it stands right now, at
least a portion of the area may receive some precipitation each day
through the end of the extended forecast.
