Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Binghamton NY
1253 PM EDT Thu May 2 2024

.SYNOPSIS...
Dry weather has returned thru Friday. Temperatures will remain
above average for early May. Then, a brief cool down with
periods of rain showers is expected for the upcoming weekend.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT/...
945 AM Update...

The weak cold front has pushed through slightly faster than
anticipated, and will keep high temperatures in the low to mid
60s for northern Central NY. Otherwise, forecast remains on
track.

330 AM Update...

A weak cold front is pushing through the region early this
morning and just kicking off a few isolated sprinkles, but not
expecting anymore than a trace of rain from any of these.

Ridging begins to build into the area today NW flow advecting
in cooler air from the Twin Tiers northward, so high
temperatures will be a little cooler this afternoon. However,
the cooler air may not make it further south into the
Scranton/Wilkes Barre area, so highs here will likely be similar
to what we saw on Wednesday. Dry weather will continue through
the period with another great day expected on Thursday with
temperatures a few degrees warmer than today.

&&

.SHORT TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/...
1245 PM Update...

A slow-moving cold front sweeping across the area Saturday will
bring rounds of rain showers Saturday and into Sunday night.
Temperatures will decrease from the mid- to high-70s Friday to
the high-50s to mid-60s Saturday and Sunday as that slow-moving
cold front moves through Central NY and NE PA. Currently, total
precipitation ranges from up to an inch in northern portions of
Central NY to up to a half of an inch elsewhere Saturday morning
through Sunday evening. Additionally, there are chances for
non-severe afternoon thunderstorms on Sunday, mainly for the
Twin Tiers and NE PA. These are subject to change as model
guidance attempts to predict the speed of progression the front
moves. The slower the front progresses, the higher the total
precipitation will likely be. We`ll keep monitoring the
progression of this front as we head into the weekend.

&&

.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
1245 PM Update...

Lingering showers can be expected Monday as the aforementioned
slow-moving cold front exits our area. A weak warm front is
expected to move into the area heading into the mid-week, with
temperatures increasing back to the mid- to high-70s by
Wednesday. Overall a generally quiet weather pattern with some
nuisance rain showers, and chances for afternoon thunderstorms.

&&

.AVIATION /18Z THURSDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
High pressure builds into the region today with late day VFR
conditions expected. There is a small chance for fog at ELM and
RME early Friday morning, however, confidence is too low to add
to the forecast at this time.

Winds will increase later this morning from the west- northwest
with gusts of 10-20 kts, before becoming light a variable after
sunset tonight.

Outlook...

Friday...Mainly VFR, but evening showers/t`storms possible.

Saturday into Monday...Restrictions possible in showers and
thunderstorms.
