Fire Weather Planning Forecast for West Texas/Southeast New Mexico
National Weather Service Midland/Odessa TX
306 AM CDT Tue May 7 2024

...RED FLAG WARNING IN EFFECT THIS AFTERNOON THROUGH EARLY THIS
EVENING FOR RELATIVE HUMIDITY OF 15% OR LESS, 20-FT WINDS OF 20
MPH OR MORE, AND VERY HIGH TO EXTREME FIRE DANGER FOR SOUTHEAST
NEW MEXICO AND WEST TEXAS SOUTH TO THE DAVIS MOUNTAINS...

...FIRE WEATHER WATCH IN EFFECT FROM WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON THROUGH
WEDNESDAY EVENING FOR RELATIVE HUMIDITY OF 15% OR LESS, 20-FT
WINDS OF 20 MPH OR MORE, AND VERY HIGH TO EXTREME FIRE DANGER FOR
SOUTHEAST NEW MEXICO AND WEST TEXAS SOUTH TO THE MARFA PLATEAU
AND PRESIDIO VALLEY...

.DISCUSSION...

Above normal temperatures and breezy conditions continue today and
tomorrow, with RHs bottoming out below 15% areawide each afternoon.
Single-digit RHs are forecast generally along and west of the Pecos
River each day, where, unfortunately, most locations missed out on
recent wetting rains. ERCs continue to climb in these areas, nearing
the 90th percentile. 20ft winds from SE NM south to the Davis Mtns
will reach 20 to 30 mph today, where a Red Flag Warning is in effect.
Recovery tonight will be poor out west, and good across far eastern
zones, with another round of critical fire weather conditions with
RFTI around 6-8 expected across western areas Wed. Increased winds
will result in critical conditions from SE NM south to the Presidio
Valley, where a Fire Weather Watch is in effect. A cold front Thurs
will temper fire weather concerns, with lighter winds, below normal
temperatures, and rain chances returning for the weekend.
