Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Pago Pago AS
208 PM SST Tue Apr 30 2024

.Short term...
Thunderstorms that brought heavy rainfall, thunder, and a
lightning show last night continues to diminish in the area.
Breezy winds from the east is the current driver in pushing
this active weather further west. A stable trend is evident on
latest surface and upper air observations as the trade winds have
kicked in. Expect showers embedded within the trade wind flow
through midweek, before another round of possible thunderstorms
moves across the American Samoa Region.

Latest model data shows a trough dominating in the second half of
the forecast period. This feature will diminish windspeeds while
bringing an uptick in showers Wednesday night. During this time,
GDI models (convection and instability indicator) suggests a
higher chance for convection and heavy rainfall through the new
week. Hence, the potential for flooding is possible with the
latter trough.

.Marine...
Latest wave heights seen on satellite data are around 6 to 8 feet.
These heights usually fall within the small craft advisory
threshold as well as wind speeds over 20 mph. With the
aforementioned waves and trades, choppy seas are likely. Hence, a
small craft advisory will remain in effect through Wednesday.
Thereafter, seas will subside below advisory thresholds when a
trough develops in the region Wednesday night.
