...ABOVE NORMAL RAINFALL FOR ALL AND ABOVE NORMAL TEMPERATURES FOR
MOST CLIMATE SITES FOR JUNE...

We`ll start off with the single exception, Yakutat`s temperature was
0.7 degrees below normal for the month. This was due to them having
the most rainy days from frontal systems and having a significant
amount of days of low marine layer stratus and fog, which was due to
a dirty ridge parked in place over the eastern Gulf in between the
frontal systems. Sitka was impacted by the marine layer, as well,
but for much less time, and their monthly average temperature was
1.2 degrees above normal. Ketchikan`s monthly average temperature
was 1.1 degree above normal. Juneau`s monthly average temperature
was 0.2 degrees above normal. The above normal values can be
attributed to appreciable warm air advection out ahead of several
frontal systems that moved over the area and a few extended periods
of sunny to partly cloudy skies that provided good radiative surface
heating.

For the majority of the last third of the month, a few weakening
frontal systems primarily tracked over a ridge of high pressure that
was parked over the eastern Gulf and Panhandle. This primarily
brought appreciable rainfall amounts to parts of the northern
Panhandle, while leaving the southern Panhandle mainly dry. For
periods behind the frontal systems, onshore flow and cooler air
aloft caused convective shower activity with some additional
topographic enhancement for the northern Panhandle, some of which
contained moderate to heavy rainfall, which made the spatial
distribution of rainfall totals highly variable for those
time frames. Earlier in the month, the frontal systems that moved
through the region came from a more westerly or southwesterly
direction, impacting the Panhandle much more evenly and giving the
southern Panhandle a higher proportion of the total rain received in
southeast Alaska.

Yakutat`s total monthly liquid precipitation was 2.66 inches above
normal. Sitka`s total rainfall was 1.9 inches above normal. Juneau`s
was 0.66 inches above normal, and Ketchikan`s was 0.39 inches above
normal. Heavier showers, which totaled 1.26 inches on the 28th
helped that site finally be above normal.
