Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Pago Pago AS

.Short term...

Satellite imagery continues to show the edge of a trough along the
American Samoa islands this afternoon after having heavy rainfall
and thunderstorms this morning over the territory. The risk of
thunderstorms continue throughout the overnight hours, but the
trough is expected to weaken starting after sunrise on Saturday.
Drier air from the southeast is expected to advect into the region
and wind convergence will weaken, which will contribute to the
weakening of the trough. A mix of sun and clouds are expected
throughout the weekend along with the possibility of passing
showers. The risk of rainfall will reduce from numerous showers
this evening (70% chance) down to scattered showers tomorrow
through Sunday afternoon (40% chance). Confidence is high that
the east/southeasterly winds will increase this weekend up to
around 20 mph, reaching up to 25 mph at times. However, this
strength of wind is below the Wind Advisory criteria.

By Sunday evening and Monday morning, we are expected a weak
trough to move over the region to increase the risk of showers
back to numerous (70% chance) during this time. Breezy winds will
remain. Severe weather is not anticipated during this time.

.Long term...

As the aforementioned trough moves away from the region by Monday
afternoon, drier air moves back over the region. The risk of
passing showers remain, but more sun than clouds are expected
during the days next week. Winds will decrease, but the easterly
breeze will remain around 10 to 15 mph. Severe weather is not
expected during this time.

.Marine...

Choppy seas from increasing east/southeasterlies will continue
throughout the weekend. Winds are expected to reach a fresh
breeze, which will maintain rough seas and is expected to build up
to 9 feet. Even though period timing is relatively short, seas
will likely be high enough to produce surf within the High Surf
Advisory criteria. The highest surf this weekend will be along the
southern and eastern shores of American Samoa.

Winds will slowly decrease early to mid week and seas will begin
to ease. Sea heights are expected to ease to 6 to 8 feet by
Tuesday and 5 to 7 feet from Wednesday through the end of the
week. This time period will be closely monitored due to the
holiday festivities such as the fishing tournament and the fautasi
race.
