Weather Summary for Iowa
National Weather Service Des Moines IA
523 AM CDT Tue Apr 16 2024

Today:

Showers and storms have been ongoing through much of the overnight
hours. Frequent lightning and gusty winds have been associated with
storms so far early this morning, but some hail remains possible.
Temperatures as of 5 AM are mild and in the 50s to 60s across much of
the state. Winds out of the southeast to east remain breezy to gusty
with gusts up to around 35-40 mph.

Today will be a stormy day with multiple rounds of storms possible.
Some of these storms will likely be severe with large hail, damaging
wind gusts, and some tornadoes all possible. A few of the storms could
produce significant severe weather. In addition to the storms, gusty
winds will continue through the day today with gusts up to 50 mph
possible outside of thunderstorms. A Wind Advisory is in effect for
much of central into northwest and northeast Iowa today for these
strong wind gusts, though wind gusts in some thunderstorms may be
higher. High temperatures today will be in the 60s to 70s. Make sure
you have multiple ways to receive warnings today and stay weather
aware!

Tonight and beyond:

The severe weather potential will end tonight, but some showers may
linger into early Wednesday, especially northeast. Additional showers
are likely Thursday from central Iowa into the Missouri Valley.
Cooler temperatures can be expected to end the work week as well, with
highs in the 50s and lows in the 30s.
