Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service New Orleans LA
619 AM CDT Thu Mar 28 2024

...New AVIATION...

.SHORT TERM...
(Today through Friday)
Issued at 239 AM CDT Thu Mar 28 2024

Axis of the upper longwave trough was moving across the area early
this morning, with ridging over the Rockies. A new trough was
coming onshore in the Pacific Northwest. At the surface, high
pressure extended from Tulsa to Indianapolis. Temperatures at 3 AM
CDT ranged from the upper 40s to mid 50s under mostly clear skies.

High pressure will continue to slide southeastward and be centered
over North Florida Friday evening. Little in the way of cloud
cover is expected today or tomorrow. Northerly winds will still
be in place today, so it`s entirely possible that the Mississippi
Coast will be the warm spot 2 days in a row. In any case, high
temperatures will generally be in the 70s both days. Overnight
lows will remain a little bit cool tonight with lows in the 40s
across most of the area. Can`t rule out one or two spots falling
into the 30s, or remaining near 50. The one adjustment that was
made again today was to lower forecast dew points using the NBM
10th percentile, which lowers relative humidities below 30 percent
across the east half of the area. Winds of 10 to 15 mph won`t
quite reach Red Flag criteria, but it still could produce a few
problems.

.LONG TERM...
(Friday night through Wednesday)
Issued at 239 AM CDT Thu Mar 28 2024

Upper ridging over the Gulf of Mexico will be controlling the
weather through the weekend and into Monday. Don`t expect much
more than high clouds across the area through Sunday or Monday.
Temperatures will gradually creep up a couple degrees each day. By
Sunday and Monday, high temperatures will generally be in the
lower or middle 80s away from direct marine influences (sea
breeze), with lows in the 60s.

Tuesday into Wednesday will see an upper trough extend from the
Great Lakes to the Texas Panhandle. This will push a cold front
through the area sometime around Tuesday night. This will bring a
chance of rain Tuesday or Tuesday night, followed by drier weather
and sunnier skies. Looks to be about 5 to 10 degrees cooler, but
no major cold spell in store.
