Fire Weather Planning Forecast for NW Oregon and SW Washington
National Weather Service Portland OR
256 PM PDT Wed May 23 2018

...Thunderstorms expected mainly over the Cascades this evening
and tomorrow...
...Elevated Mid-level Haines from instability for the Valley and
areas west this evening...

.BROADCAST DISCUSSION...Thunderstorms continue this afternoon
over the Cascades and possibly over the foothills and northern
interior as well. Storms will be short-lived with the occasional
wetting rain nearer the crest. Elsewhere, marine air will be the
primary influence. The north interior will see the marine air hold
off until late afternoon. Breezy central gorge winds today.
Cascade storms could produce LAL 3 activity tomorrow.

.DISCUSSION...Afternoon update: Storms are remaining confined to
the Cascades thus far and are producing decent rainfall. Amounts
have been around a third of an inch with one report over an inch
covering 3 hours. Still see potential for storms to drift westward
along the Columbia river this evening, but am not too confident.
Otherwise, not many significant changes from the morning package
aside from refining the lower chance areas for thunderstorms
tomorrow and removing them all together Friday.

Previous discussion follows: A low pressure system moving
eastward will begin to destabilize the atmosphere later tonight
and bring a chance for showers and thunderstorms across the
eastern zones today. Upper dynamics and slow storm motions will
limit the longevity for any individual cell today. Wetting rain
possibilities be limited to areas near the Cascade crest. Our flow
aloft will turn more south-southeasterly on Thursday but should
still keep storms over the Cascades. However, the upper level
support for the storms brings a notable chance for longer lived
cell and potential LAL 3 activity from the storms closer toward
the crest. All models more or less suggest high pressure will
return late in the weekend and/or early next week, which should
lead to drier and warmer conditions.

Note: Routine briefings will begin at 940 Tuesday, May 29th.
Access information for the briefing has changed. Please contact
your local fire management official to get your information
relayed to us.
