AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
National Weather Service Eureka CA
453 AM PDT Wed Apr 17 2024

.SYNOPSIS...Dry, warm temperatures are expected to continue for
the remainder of the week. Breezy northerly winds are forecast for
coastal areas through today as a high pressure builds into the
region. Marine stratus is expected to return for the later half
of the week as the northerly winds subside. Temperatures will
begin a colling trend this weekend as the high pressure shift
eastward and a shortwave trough approaches the northern portion of
the area.

&&

.DISCUSSION...High pressure remain across the area promoting quiet
weather conditions. Latest GOES-West satellite imagery depicts
high level moisture from the Pacific moving around the ridge and
spreading high level clouds across the forecast area this morning.
Daytime temperatures for the interior valleys are forecast to be
very similar like yesterday`s reading, with highs in the 70s.
Coastal temperatures are expected to be 3 to 5 degrees warmer
compared with yesterday reading, though breezy northerly winds
redeveloping in the afternoon will keep the coast from warming
much more than the low 60s. Northwesterly winds will subside this
evening, and a weaker offshore flow component will continue to
keep much of the coast free of stratus and fog tonight.

The upper-level heights will continue to strengthening across the
NEPAC through Thursday. As result, interior temperatures are
expected to rises into the lower 80s on Thursday. While, NBM indicates
a high probability of coastal temperatures in the low 60s degrees
by Thursday afternoon.

On Friday, ensemble cluster analysis indicates the high pressure
over the Pacific NW will begin to breakdown and shift eastward as
a upper level shortwave approaches the area. The flow will become
more zonal, though this will start to deepen the marine layer and
bring some cooler air to the coastal counties. Trinity, eastern
Mendocino and Lake counties are not expected to see much change on
Friday. A weak front will tried to push and clip the northern
portion of the area Saturday into Sunday. Light rain or sprinkles
are possible for the coastal areas in Del Norte County late
Saturday afternoon. Other than that, mostly mid to high clouds
streaming across the forecast area. Ensembles and deterministic
guidance indicates a shortwave ridging building over the Pacific
NW and northern California on Sunday, before a upper level trough
approaches the area.

&&

.AVIATION...VFR conditions will persist with scattered areas of low
ceilings occasionally drifting into into the coastline. Light
offshore flow early this morning will keep coastal stratus at bay
before a resurgence of northerly winds this afternoon at both
coastal terminals. Exposure to the encroaching expansion fan
downwind of southern OR will produce especially gusty conditions at
CEC. Winds expected to subside this evening, potentially allowing
coastal stratus to return early Thursday morning, particularly at
ACV. UKI will remain clear and dry with occasional gusts mixed in
with afternoon downslope flow.

&&

.MARINE...Strong northerlies continue to produce steep wind waves
across all zones. Expansion fans extending downwind of Port Orford,
Point Saint George and Cape Mendocino will make a final push into
the inner waters this afternoon, maintaining small craft conditions
and producing isolated gale gusts through early Thursday morning.
Solid gales in the outer waters will expire during the same period
as winds diminish and migrate offshore. The sea state will continue
to subside under the influence of a decaying NW swell and light
northerly wind waves, with wave heights dropping to 5-6 feet by
Friday. A resurgence of the coastal jet and increasing wave heights
are possible late this weekend with a reorientation of the Pacific
High.
