Subject: Change to flood impact categories on the Deep River and
Turkey Creek in Lake County, Indiana
Effective May 1, 2024, flood impact categories will change for
Turkey Creek at Schererville (NWS identifier TCSI3), Turkey Creek at
Merrillville (NWS identifier MTCI3), and the Deep River at Hobart
(NWS identifier HLGI3). These changes were coordinated with
representatives from the Lake County Homeland Security and Emergency
Management Agency and the Little Calumet Basin Commission.
For Turkey Creek at Schererville, Action Stage will change from 9.0
feet to 7.0 feet, minor flood stage will be set at 7.5 feet,
moderate flood stage will be set at 8.5 feet, and major flood stage
will be set at 9.5 feet.
For Turkey Creek at Merrillville, action stage will remain unchanged
at 9.0 feet, minor flood stage will be set at 11.0 feet, moderate
flood stage will be set at 14.5 feet, and major flood stage will be
set at 17.0 feet.
For Deep River at Hobart, action stage will change from 17.0 feet to
11.0 feet, minor flood stage will change from 18.0 feet to 13.0
feet, moderate flood stage will change from 19.0 feet to 17.0 feet,
and major flood stage will remain unchanged at 21.0 feet.
