...NWS Damage Survey for 05/08/24 to 05/09/24 Tornado Event
Update #1...

.Update...
Updated with more details and information about the two tornadoes
in central Georgia from May 9.

.Overview...
Several rounds of strong to severe thunderstorms moved through
portions of north and central Georgia on Wednesday, May 8 and
Thursday, May 9, 2024. These storms were part of a larger storm
system that impacted a large portion of the Southeast United States.
Several storms moved into an unstable environment favorable for
tornadoes on the evening of May 8 and again during the afternoon
on May 9. A survey team from the National Weather Service office in
Peachtree City, GA determined that two EF-1 tornadoes occurred in
central Georgia on May 9. One tornado occurred in northern Dodge, far
southern Laurens, and northern Wheeler county and another occurred
in northern Montgomery and Toombs county. Both EF-1 tornadoes had
peak wind speeds of 90 mph.

Another survey team traveled to Gilmer county to the south of Ellijay
to investigate damage from the evening of May 8, and is still
evaluating damage at this time.

Data and final details of the survey are still being collected and
will be sent via Public Information Statements and will also available
on our website at http://weather.gov/ffc
